My instructor taught me to pull the slide over hitting the lever, because when the adrenalin is pumping, it is easier to do. That would help lefties also.

Cool Idea. I don't really see any drawbacks other than getting spoiled and forgetting to release the mag after a partial mag being swapped out.
Edit: Never mind. If the mag wasn't empty there would still be a round in the chamber.. Drawbacks?

I am sure there is a good reason why most modern guns don't do this. I am just not bright enough today to figure it out...
I found another one... Heckler-Koch HK-4 pistol http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg146-e.htm "The slide stop is automatically disengaged when a new magazine is inserted." Last edited by sloan1919; 11-21-2006 at 12:30 AM. |

I don't think this would be a desirable "feature" for me. I would find my guns doing something I didn't expect to be significantly more disturbing than it not doing something I was expecting. I don't like the idea of my guns doing anything they are not explicitly MADE to do. I'll stick to slingshotting or hitting the slide release, personally. -l

I don't think I would like that very much, as far as safety goes, especially if I don't know its going to happen. That would have gotten Antonio killed in Desperado when he was swapping mags and trying to be very quiet.

I have seen some S&W's do this although i don't think it is built into them. When i went thru thr police academy they taught us that if us put in a fresh mag with an empty chamber torack the round and not use the slide release. This is to ensure that a round gets picked up and seated properly in the chamber. The benefit of this is useing the full strength of the slides battery to seat the round. Hope this helps you out a bit.

was taught at the police academy not to use the slide release but to instead rack the round by grasping the slide with your off gun hand and pull the slide all the way to the rear while pushing the gun towards the target. this way the slide runs the full corse of it's battery.

I've heard that the Bersa 380 is designed to release the slide on mag changes, and I have heard of a couple XD's doing this also. You can try a search, probably at least 6 months ago it was posted.
