pitting around firing pin (Updated with pictures)
I was looking at my XD9 the other day and noticed pitting around the firing pin. I remember seeing these threads on it a while back:
got a call today Problems? cracking and pitting Has anyone else had this problem? I also have an XD40SC but it only has about 1000 rounds through it and no signs of pitting or wear. My XD 9 is about 4 years old and was one of the first ones Springfield imported. I'm guessing I have close to 6000 rounds through it. I only shoot winchester whitebox, UMC and Federal ammo through it, no reloads. When I clean I use Militec or Breakfree CLP, Gun Scrubber and occasionly Hopps #9. It's hard to see on these, but you'll notice it has vertical rows of pitting.

Powder is a funny substance.
The empty being ejected may still have some burning powder flakes. When the new round is forced up the feed ramp it hits those little burning flakes and keeps them fored against the breech face of the slide. The round is fired and the force of it moving to the rear through recoil scrapes those burning bits and unburnt bits of powder against the breech face. The result is what you see in your pictures. Little pits or scraped spots. They are common on all rifearms and you will see them on anypistol that has been fire with any regularity or even some that have not been fired much at all. Also depending one the uniformity of the marks they could be tool chatter from the machining process. Remember these guns are made in a production facility, not a custom gunshop like Wilson or Nighthawk. I have a Glock that has had close to 10,000 rounds put through it and it has all kinds of pits and scars on it's breechface and Glocks are some of the hardest finished guns on the planet right now. The harder the finish the more easy it is to break or chip. There is a compromise with the surface treatment of metal to how hard the underlying surface is. The under lying metal is usually soft and allows the surface metal to put a little dent or pit in the under metal. This is a common occurance and will only cause a problem if it becomes too gouged or pitted it will cause the feeding round to jam on the breechface. Just keep an eye on it and if it not to your liking then have a smith polish the breechface and you will be fine.

I had this happen to my STI, and Glock, and found that the primers where leaking gas, and cutting the face. They where Remington small pistol primers. They showed no signs of high preasure, just small cracks at the corners.
