Chip in the locking block

I could be obsessing a bit. Since a poster (I think Mr. TuffPaws) had the problem with cracks in his locking block, I inspect this part very intensely to see if there is any unusual wear.

Well, I found some.

#1 is a small chip on the locking block!
#2 is a strand of hair that shouldn't be there.. looks like one of Molly's (my dog; probably not important, but I thought I would point that out.)

This does not strike me as normal wear. I actually noticed this after my last shooting adventure, but I kind of brushed it off as a shadow or something. But today I ran my finger over it to see if it was a chip, and it most certainly is!

Is this something that you guys think I should send the pistol back for repair? At this point it is not causing any problems in terms of malfunctioning, but it seems to me that there must be a cause for a chip to be created in the part.

Hmmm.... you could have waited for the earthquake to subside before snapping that first image. :P

The chip in the locking block might not get worse/bigger with the continued use of your XD, but why take chances? Take advantage of the lifetime warranty on your XD and call Springfield to request that the locking block be replaced, as I did mine (as chronicled here).

Good luck, and please let us know how it turns out.

Shut up! Eveyone knows that XDs can do no wrong.

Yeah, happened to be too. My chip was bigger though. Call SA and they will fix it, but you have to send the gun in to them. I don't know why, but they ask for the whole gun.

That is one reason I like Kahr customer service. I complained about what I perceived to be a problem with my barrel and they sent me a new one two days later.

If I had to ship it back to them it would have been $30 shipping costs.

I believe Springfield reimburses shipping for warranty work.

That would also be very acceptable. I will have to remember that if I ever need to send my XD in.

You shut up Mr. TuffPaws!

LOL

Yours was the cracking of the block that I was thinking of dleong, but I remember Mr. TP saying he had a problem too...

I will give them a call, and see what they say.

Please let us know what kind of treatment you get from SA, hopefully just as nice as Kahr. I have been inspecting the locking block after every shooting as well. It will be interesting to see what SA has to say and what they will do. IMO Go ahead and get it fixed. I know it sucks to be w/o your gun for awhile, maybe they will just send you a new locking block.

I most certainly will let you know! That is my way. I don't anticipate any problems... I bought the pistol last September, or Late August, so it's still pretty new to have a chip in it.

They are on Central time, so by the time I called them, they had closed up shop.. I will have to try again in the morning.. if my boss doesn't hurry me out the door in the morning to take care of whatever crisis developed over-night..
