So I stopped by my local shooting range tonight just to look at the xd .45. I figured while I was there I'd shoot a few rounds in the range downstairs. So I went down and there was a league on about half of the range. I asked about it and ended up joining.

It's free to join and you get a discount on range time. You run through different drills. From what I saw, it was stuff like two shots to the body in X amount of seconds. Two to the body, one to the head. A few shots, then reload then a few more shots. Shooting from your weak hand, shooting from behind an object, etc.

Anyway, it looks like a lot of fun and a nice way to learn.

Knight 'o Light is the one to talk to for the main skinny on much of the competitive-type stuff, if you're interested in learning more. And it does look like a lot of fun--if I can get my ammo budget raised a bit I'd be looking into it myself.

We have a Monday night league at the range I frequent. $5 to shoot a 50 round course. It is loosely based on the Sky Marshals qualification course. Very informal. The winner gets a free Coke.

You guys have to get out there and shoot at least one match if you are going to carry concealed. I don't care who tells you competition is bad for defensive shooting skills! It is not! You will learn you firearm so much quicker than you could ever learn from 1 or 2 classes. I have had some pistol training and I have to say it tells you techniques. Competition helps you put them into practice. It lets you know what works the best for you. If it don't work in competition you bet your ass it ain't gonna work on the street!

And Dan the ammo budget excuse only works for so long!!! Living in AZ you got tons of good clubs to shoot matches at!!! Get out there and shoot!

I have to say Dan is right about the budget when it comes to matches, but http://www.idpa.com doesn't take but 100-150 rounds per match. You will need a concealment garment, good quality holster, and 2 mag pouches(hey wait the XD gear package comes with some of that!). For http://www.uspsa.com you will need a good quality holster, at least 4 mag pouches/w mags to fill them, and anywhere from 100-200 rounds of ammo. No concealment necassary in USPSA. The people are alway friendly and are glad to help new shooters. Get out there and shoot!

I ain't that good. I only hold a C-class in production for USPSA, and I finally got classed as Expert in Enhanced Service Pistol with IDPA. I do shoot with a some darn good shooters though. One placed 7th in the 2005 IDPA nationals. He also placed 7th in the USPSA area 1 championships. He is very friendly and gives me really good advice.

Rdub is another great shooter and he is another person that knows a lot about IDPA and USPSA shooting.

Get out there and shoot, blah, blah, you got no excuses in Arizona, yadda yadda....nuthin but a bunch of freakin' gun nuts around here....

Oh hey, how're you guys doing? I know, I know (believe me!) I need to practice more; we've been saving our pennies for the Georgia trip so I'm going into some serious gunpowder withdrawal. All I have to say is there's a bunch of paper that's going to die the hideous death of a thousand perforations as soon as I get back.

I'm going to get serious about the league shooting as soon as I can make my next big purchase, which is a nice reloading rig from the hometown guys over at Dillon. I'll just have to shoot vicariously through you for a bit until that happens.
