.40 or another 9?
Sup folks, I have the xd9 service model. I definately want to get a sub-compact, but I can't decide if I should go with another 9mm or the .40.
I mean on one hand, I won't have to worry about getting different ammo or keeping it seperate, I believe the 9 will hold more shots, and the ammo is cheaper. On the other hand, the .40 might be a little better of a round, although I'm not entirely convinced that for self defense, the .40 has much on the 9mm at all. Anyway, what do you guys think? thanks. |

Personally, I will NOT trust a 9mm if MY Life is at stake. I will say 9mm is a great plinker and it's cheap to plink with....but thats ALL it's good for. Get the .40 and be done with it.

I really like the recoil factor and price of ammo on the 9mm, but I also don't know that I'd stake my life on that round, when I know that I can handle and shoot a .40 accurately. My next XD will definately be a .40, since I already have a XD-45 Tactical. Anyway, I know it's mainly a preference deal. Go with what feels good and what you can shoot.

Go 40. All the departments up here are going 40 or 45 from the 9.
Reason - 9 has far less stopping power and won't do squat against even a soft target (car door, plaster walls, etc.). Most LEOs feel outgunned when carrying a 9 since most of the BGs are armed with either a 40 or 45. Have heard rumors that the state police is going GAP - but I haven't confirmed that yet (most of what they do they like to hold close to the vest - even from other LEOs). Had a conversation with an armorer out in CO who works for the state police out there. They're going 45 ACP from 40 and 9. Again - stopping power can't be beat. If cost of ammo isn't a consideration, I would go 45 ACP in the service or tactical. If cost is a consideration, go 40.

If you can shoot the forty well then get it. If you can't get the nine. Either way shoot hollow point ammo.

Thank you jetsiphon...I've seen that photo before and numerous other comparisons between 9 and .40...and I just don't think that the .40 has much over the 9mm. Those who shoot the 40 seem to think there is nothing like it and anyone with a 9mm might as well have a 22 because they're both pointless.
I dunno, I just don't know if I can justify the extra cost of ammo, the hassle of having to buy different ammo any time I want to go out and shoot, the hassle of having to keep the very similar looking ammo seperated, etc. Maybe a 40 will go through a car window better than a 9, but I doubt I'll be shooting through anyone's windshield anytime in the near future. And when I'm in an event that a 9mm just doesn't do the trick whereas a .40 would have, I guess that'll just be my time to go if I do make the decision to get another 9. ----- Anyway, I'm still undecided. |
