A 9mm is essentially a .38, which means that a .40 is hardly large enough to be considered a bigger hole puncher. Hollow points aren't always going to open, and even on those that do, the 9mm and .40 open up to similar sizes, again negating the larger hole idea. Both rounds tend to penetrate to similar depths, leaving shot placement the biggest decider.

I've owned a .40 and fired three different makes. I don't find it a comfortable round to shoot (for me), and I certainly don't feel the .40 is the godsend of self defense handguns. The 9mm is just fine. And less expensive.

Having said that, if you want a caliber that makes a bigger hole, the .45 is an excellent choice.

You're only looking at pentration. Look at the difference in the initial wound cavity. The 9mm is the only one that's noticeably different, and it's smaller than the rest. So while they may all penetrate to the same depth, the 9mm, at least in that example, doesn't induce nearly the same amount of trauma. Kind of a big deal.

As for the morgue results... 9mm is probably the most common round involved in most shootings, which is why most light police body armor (correct me?) is rated against 9mm. It's the most common. So you're going to have more dead people by it.

9mm is weaker than 45acp. It makes up for this with capacity, less recoil, and more controllability (For most people). These factors are just as important as the damage the bullet does.

How about some physics equations?

Terminal ballistics are more complicated than just power and energy... but I'm pretty sure that most every way you look at it from a scientific perspective, the 9mm isn't going to be very high on the power curve. And that ballistics gel shot isn't too flattering for the 9mm round, either.

When your talking CCW guns and you want a carry gun to me it doesn't make sense to carry a smaller round.

With the XD SC you get 1 more round in the 9mm than the .40 To me that doesn't = a lot more capacity.

I like the 9mm and would carry it and not feel out gunned. But given the choice (and I was ) I had to go with the .40 because the SC is a self defence/CCW gun.

I take my Tac/service to target shoot, I take my SC everywhere else (except for criminal protection zones)

You know, this crap happens with in-breeding. You can only hope the unfortunate, screwed up love child would take themselves out of the gene pool when they discover electrical outlets and butter knives or start huffing paint when they're 7 or 8 but every once in a while a truly magnificent specimen makes it to adulthood to display for the world just how freaking stupid they really are.

I like that example of the bullet penetration. Where did you find that?
