if they went thru an extrememly long course, not the normal CCW. of course it would be something that would be optional to the teachers. maybe just administration? just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this. At my highschool, ten plus years ago, we had LEO's on duty so they carried but that seems to be more of a city issue. whats your thoughts?

Yes!
Good guy's obey laws, bad guy's do not. Gun free school zones only keep the honest, law-abiding folk from carrying weapons much like locks only keep honest people honest as a bad guy will just break a window or something to gain entry to a building. Bad guy's have no respect for the law or they wouldn't be bad guy's--would they? Our crime rates are out of sight, why? Good guys are prosicuted for doing the right thing, while the bad guy's rights are protected. Give the CHL's of the nation the right to carry anywhere a LEO can. After all, we're honest citizens who have passed background tests--no felonies, no due taxes, not one who beats his wife or children. Oh, we might have a traffic ticket, but we don't do drugs or depend upon alcohol to get thru our lives either. Once the word gets out to the world that we intend to really protect our children by arming our staff, these sinceless acts of violence would dissappear into the wind. Russ

Would that have stopped the horror in Lancaster? I would hope so. However, personal choice and religious philosophy of the community would play a major role in what (if anything) was available to the teacher to protect his/her charges. Perhaps a more realist alternative is armed guards in the schools. Our community has implemented a policy of placing guards at all available (i.e., unlocked) entrances to the buildings. Most of these “guards” are out-of-work Moms or retired older people, with little or no training – and they are unarmed (school policy prohibits any form of guns on any campus area). I think their sole role is to become the first target for any deranged individual coming into a building. Properly trained and equipped armed guards would provide the resource needed to stop the threat cold, but I’m highly doubtful of this measure ever being discussed, let alone implemented in area schools.

I think the thought of some of the teachers I remember from back in highschool having handguns is a bit scary if my memory serves me correctly. Maybe the school districts should hire armed security guards...and have metal detectors.

To ban handguns on schoolgrounds is impeding on 2nd ammendment rights! BG's go there and KNOW there will be no opposition. This needs to stop.

Sure. I think if Teachers wanted to carry and they went through a specialized course to make sure they were safe and trained well why shouldn't they be allowed to carry.
Heck. Here in Philly even the school police have to call the 'real police' if there's a serious incident. IMO, the best way to stop someone that has violent intentions and no rational explanation is by lethal force.

As someone who is currently in college to become a teacher I have to say that it might not be that bad an idea. If we were talking about a lengthy and in depth class similar to police or military standards I think that it could work. Here in FL the schools do have "real" cops and they carry but most schools only have 1 or 2 officers so it would be good if they had back up. I also think that students would think twice about shooting up a school if they also had to worry about armed teachers. It would also go a long way into teaching kids that they better show respect to everyone because you never know who has what and who's going to do what, just a good life lesson.

I've encouraged this for years. I have a couple teachers in my family. I would like to see an allowance for school personnel to carry during the day, and for any ccw permit holder to be allowed to at least carry during extra-curricular activities at the school. Model the program after the one for the pilots. It's a more stringent program and marksmanship is the driving force, not so much the legality of use, as is stressed in so many of the ccw programs out there.
