Deer Hunting with an XD

I am debating hunting with my XD 5" .45ACP this year. I hunt in heavy brush/timber. Here in Tennessee the deer are very small as well.

Any thoughts on this gun/caliber for deer hunting?

EFK FireDragon is building a 400 CorBon conversion for the XD45ACP. That may be a better bet for you, if you want to bring down large game.

I have a .44 Mag that I could use, but the deer here are so small I thought the .45ACP would be enough.

Back in Illinois, I wouldn't think of less than the .44, due to the longer ranges and much larger body mass.

I just thought it would be fun to use my XD, but I want to be ethical as well.

Wow, keep us posted on this one. If you can bag a deer with a handgun (without havin to track a blood trail for hours) my hat's off to ya. I have a hard enough time with a .30-30 and a 20" sight radius.

What I used Last Year

A new T\C Encore with a 15 inch .243 Win Barrel, I put a Bushnell 2X32 scope on it and it is an Awesome gun!! Dropped a big doe from 130 Yards. This gun IS ALOT of fun. Be sure to check your local hunting laws. Most states have regs on min caliber and or shell casing length. Most also require a minumim lenthgh on the gun barrel.

I can't believe you can use a semi-auto pistol to hunt deer in TN!

You can in MI too... just has to be a strait walled cartridge (no .357sig, etc)

You might want to take a look at the Hornady 185 gr. XTP for deer hunting.
