A friend of mine told me that it's not a good idea to let the slide slam shut under normal use and that you're supposed to guide it closed with your hand after releasing it w/ the slide release.
Opinions? |

I've never had a problem with my xd45 and letting it close on its own after loading a new mag. Whats the difference between that and normal sliding back into place after a case is ejected?

If theres a live round in the chamber it won't hurt anything. If empty it's just banging steel against steel. Not a great idea IMHO.

Extending the question... is it bad to let the slide close on its own when the gun in unloaded (empty chamber, no rounds in mag)? |

The gun was made to be used, if you baby it to much then it may not feed right. So if there is a round goin in the pipe slam it, but is not.....There is a lifetime warrenty.

Who sits and locks their slides back and then slams them forward for hours on end? If there's anyone doing that, then stop it. If not, doing it once after checking to see if your pistol is clear when you pick it up won't hurt it. You only need to draw the slide back less than an inch to cock it if you're dry firing. Bottom line, you don't need to baby your XD, but if you want it to work reliably, I wouldn't abuse it, either.

The ONLY time I've ever seen or even heard of a problem, was with my walther P99. where I had a AD after slaming the slide. This particular gun had a high round cound and I also had mulitple discharges from a single trigger pull.
