I visited Gander Mountain today. They had an XD40 Service with Trijicon night sights. The night sights may be good at night, but they weren't good during the day. Both front and rear were blurry for my old eyes.

They had a 10/22T there. I almost bought it but that is another story.

I dont shoot at night anyways... no night sights on any of my guns.
I dont see why the big fuss over them anyways.

For those of us that carry, night sights can be a very big deal. When looking at the statistics, most of the cases where you have to use your pistol are in lowlight conditions or at night. In this kind of situation being able to see your sights is a major advantage, and not being able to can be a safety hazard for others as well. If you aren't going to use your pistol in those sorts of conditions, they're just a nice bonus that some people say help in quick site acquisition, but if your life might depend on them, I think they're a necessity.

+1. And even if you're in a situation where you have a rail-mounted light or other flashlight to have a clear view of your target, the dimness behind the light (where your sights are) could make them difficult to see. It's probably the best hundred bucks (or thereabouts) you can spend if you carry at night.

I prefer Meprolight or Tru-Glo for both day and night visibility.

Night sights are one of those things that are not necessary on a carry gun but are very nice to have.

I've done some training/shooting in low/no light. In my last class low light shooting was part of the final shooting test. There is a class that deals strictly with low light shooting coming up in Nov that I'll probably take.

My instructors have said that people with night sights were a little slower to get the first round off but a lot more accurate with their hits. People without night sights were quicker to get the first round off but were a lot less accurate with their hits.

From my experience training and shooting in low light, I'll always have night sights on my carry guns if I can.

I´ve heard that from lots of LEO instructors too...

You got that right, brother! I put them on my carry pistol (XD40 service) and they make a world of difference when I step out of the well lite hallway and into the parking lot at night. If you can get a sight picture (i.e., actually see what you're trying to shot as opposed to pitch black), these are a potential life saver.

For nice bright sights you might try Dawson Precision fiber optic sights. They provide an excellent sight picture that addresses the problem we older shooters have with conventional sights. I have the adjustable ones on my XD 40 Tactical. If you install these sights, the front sight is much higher than the factory sight. Some of the regular holsters will not work with this sight. G Code makes a Kydex holster for the XD Tactical. It has a sight grove that works well with this sight.

fiber optics are useless without enought ambient light to make them work.

i stick to night sights with white circles around the vials, like Meprolights, for good daytime visibility.
