so im considering trading the xd40
went to the range today and my stupid thumb kept locking the slide back while firing. if my thumb is anywhere near the slide release, it does it. kinda sucks cause this is how i grip the gun and is most comfortable for me. when i adjust to keep away from the slide release, it doesnt feel right and i dont think i could replicate it in a sd situation. when i draw on a bg, i think i would use the high thumb hold i always use on my 1911's. this is no good, i cannot have the slide locking back on my daily carry gun with my normal grip.
does anyone have any suggestions as to how i can comfortably make this go away, or how to practice a new grip that would work for me? thanks!

Someone actually makes a piece that fits on the back of the grip on an XD that has thumb rests like the safetys of a 1911 that allow you to use the high thumbs grip on it.

1. Pistol didn't fit in the duty holster anymore (BIG ISSUE) 2. Need to drive out the grip saftey pin and install a longer version (not so big, but can be a bit delicate) 3. Forces you to change your grip significently - from strong hand thumb over weak hand thumb to strong hand thumb high, weak hand thumb sort of floating around out there (depending on how you train, could be a big issue). Kept it on for a few sessions at the range. Decided I didn't like it and removed it.

Or... You can do like I have done.
I had the opposite problem. With my grip, the slide wouldn't lock back on the last round. I also was touching the slide stop. I removed the slide stop from the gun and used a file to take off most of the metal on the lower part of the stop. There's still enough of the stop left for it to function as intended and I didn't have to modify the way I grip the gun. You can touch up with cold blue where you filed.

Have you checked out the videos for proper grip?
http://www.springerprecision.com/video.asp http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...7071363&q=ipsc Also pick up Brian Enos book on practical shooting. When I first picked up my XD I was resting my thumb on the slide release. The slide would not stay open on the last round.

i undestand the concern for changing grip however proper grip can do more for you then just stop hitting the slide release. A proper grip can help with follow up shots, accuracy, and stability. Maybe (scott?) springer can jump in ("loves2shoot") he has alot of great pointers about grip as well has the videos above

Why not trade for a new thumb?

Just solve the problem... cut your thumb off.

im not sure so dont quote me but i think the left thumb is used to almost pull the right thumb down. the left thumb does not touch the slide (intentionally at least) however the left thumb simply pulls down on the right thumb to keep it away from the slide. having no thumbs on the slide would not allow a firm grip
