Melonite Finish, SA response, Start(ish) date

I just called SA and ask about when they startyed the Melonite finish. They told me they started getting "Melonite in" - in April. They said if I called them with the serial number, they could tell me if it had Melonite.
I ask if they started with a certain serial number, she said should could not answer via a starting serial number? Needed the actual serial number. She must be lonely -HAHA.

She guessed if I bought my gun 2 months ago, and it had not been sitting on the shelf long, it probably had Melonite. But needed the serial number to confirm. When I get home from my business trip, I'll find out.

My guess is yes (has Melonite), I have looked at other XD's that looked a little more dull?. The finish did not look as "deep" or "rich" in color as my fairly new XD40 Tac. Maybe it's only wishful thinking.

Hope this helps with those in question.

In addition, keep in mind that the serial numbers SA assigns to guns has nothing to do with date, model, finish, or anything else. It's just a random number they assign to the gun.

This is why they need the FULL s/n when you call them, so they can look up your specific gun.

That's interesting. I wonder what the advantage is to using a random serial number instead of consecutive numbers, or a code representing the model.

I may be wrong, but I assume that the serial number is assigned the moment is the order is released to the shop floor; generated by the system. If SA order 100 units of Model A1, those 100 units will all be in sequence, hence the needs for the entire number.

I bought mine on 9/15/06 and they test fired it on "3/4/06" which is april 3rd. They told me that they could not tell based on the serial number.

It is hard to say which finish you may have as that is about the time of the change over, but as long as you are cleaning and oiling your firearm as recommended you should be fine.

Have a great day!

When I went to decide which gun was for me, I had trouble choosing between the G-26 and XD-9sc because I knew the Tenifer treatment was going to withstand more than the bruniral. Reading through these pages made me curious so I sent an email to a couple people at SA. This is the email I sent, and the return messages I received:

Mine:

To whom it may concern,

I am interested in learning whether or not my
XD-9sc was treated with the melonite finish you recently began using on
your XD line. The serial number of my firearm [which was bought in June of '06] is US803xxx. Could you please also tell me when my firearm was manufactured? Thank you for your assistance.

Theirs:

Hello J,

Your XD was manufactured in June of 2006 with the new Melonite finish.
Thank you for your interest in our Springfield Inc. products.

And another:

Hi J - That gun was built in gun and will have the melonite finish
on it.

Thanks, Tom

And still another:

J,
The melonite finish is actually part of the heat treatment process when
the firearm is made so it cannot be added to any firearm later. As for
your manufacture date the serial number shows June of 2006 and all XD
models starting shipping with the melonite as of April 2006
so your's
does have it.

Have a great day!

I think, seeing that I received the same answer from all three people, it's safe to say that if your gun has a born-on date post April '06, your slide is Melonite treated. I would be pretty vexed if my gun was a bit older, though.

It's the same process as used in Glocks "Tennifer" treatment.
