Showing clear

OK. The wife (bless her heart) wants to start shooting tac matches with the .45 now. Her problme is that while she can rack the slide to load a round she does not have the arm strength to pull the slide back and engage the slide stop after she drops her mag in order to show clear.

Thoughts? Suggestions?? I see Rich now has supercool guide rods that have different strength springs. Maybe that is something worth trying?

Thanks folks!!

You don't need to lock it open just pull back to show clear.

If its a new gun the slide will eventually be easier to pull back over use. Of course this means your recoil spring is losing compression strength. The only thing I could think of is putting a softer spring on the gun or she can just work out some more till she can pull it back. I think its only 22 pounds.

"If finished, unload and show clear"

Drop mag.

Cycle slide.

Pull back on slide for a few seconds so the RO can peek inside the action.

"If clear, hammer down holster"

Ease the slide forward.

Pull trigger in safe direction.

Holster.

Can she hold the slide back for a few seconds? No need to engage the slide stop.

I hope this helps,

Alex.

Good thoughts guys. I had forgot about just holding back. I'm a lefty and because the ejection port points down when I pull the slide back I have always had to engage the slide lock, rotate my hand counterclockwise to show clear, then slide forward, hammer down.

No sense in making the wife suffer just because of my lefty ways.

Still might have to pick up the Tungsten GR though. Hee, hee, hee......

One of the biggest problems with this strength issue is that the default is to try and simply pull on the slide. The proper movements are to push forward with the firing hand while pulling back on the slide with the support hand. of all the women I've helped train, this has helped immensely.

Showing Clear

OK, to beat this dog totally to death...

If she can't hold the slide back against the spring long enough for some RO's to do the chamber check (we have one that is realllllllly slooooooow), it's wouldn't be her fault. My wife can hardly chamber a round in my XD45, let alone hold it back for any length of time.

One solution is to place an empty magazine in her back pocket (this reduces the chance she'll grab it under the clock and reload with an empty); when it comes time to unload and show clear she can swap mags and pull the slide back. Presto! The slide locks back...drop the empty mag and finish the "slide down, hammer down, holster" routine.

Besides, this is an excuse (ahem...reason) to buy one or more spare magazines...

Now if we can just find a "reason" to buy another XD....

Make sure she's racking it properly and pushing it with her grip hand not trying to pull it with the racking hand

There's no way a good SO will let you "unload and show clear" with an empty mag in the gun. Infact, if you tried that at our club on IDPA day, you would probably be sent home and our club is super relaxed and "user friendly."

The best bet is to have her just pull the slide back and hold it long enough for the SO to check the chamber then slide down, hammer down, holster.

I think what Rangemaster is saying is to put the empty mag in, pull the slide back to slide lock, drop the empty mag and then show clear. I plan on talking to the RO anyway just to be sure what he is happy with.
