so the xd had its first hiccup, tho it is probably my fault...
my friend and i were at the range today. i was shooting another gun while he put 100 rounds through my xd. he had no problems. when i went to shoot it, the slide started failing to lock back on the last round of the magazines. i was using 2 mags, one came with the gun, the other i bought new. both did it, both are SA factory mags. the gun would do it sparatically, 2 handed or 1 handed. i use a high thumb hold 1911 style grip, and actually just came from shooting about 200 rounds through my kimber before i shot the xd. i know it could be my thumbs, but i wasnt paying attention. next time ill try to make sure i know where my thumbs are, but in the mean time is there anything that could be wrong with the gun? when does it need a new recoil spring? it is factory stock with a little over 1500 rounds through it. thanks

I had the same problem, same grip. Didn't even think of it at the time, but I went back the next weekend and payed mroe attention to it, and sure enough I was holding the slide lock down with my thumb just enough to prevent it from locking.

its kinda funny how ive been using the same grip for the longest time and it just now did it. i just cleaned it and checked slide lock with an empty mag and sure enough it functions as it should. must have been me.

This is one thing about the XD design I don't like. Slide lock on my xd40 also falls right under where my right thumb rides. I often shoot a 1911 model and my thumb is kinda 'used' to the feeling of being on the 1911's safety in that area. So I tend to be pushing ever so slightly on the xd release--thus no slide lock when mag empty.

If you are convinced it's not your grip, I would look at the magazine springs before the recoil spring. Doesn't sound like it, since it's happening with both your mags, but could be a possibility. If you keep your mags loaded all the time, the spring can become compressed and it may not put enough pressure to lock the slide.

I too, had the same problem of having my right thumb 'hitting' the slide lock and causing the slide not to lock to the rear on an empty mag. I've since corrected my grip and have not had the problem. I shoot the .45 tactica XD.

Another area to check is the slide lock itself. There's a post on the slide lock that is lifted by the empty mag. If there's something wrong with the post (too short or broken in some way) the mag follower doesn't lift the post, causing the slide to return to battery. SA replaced mine when I sent it back for a cracked locking block.
My XD40 service never did what you're saying your's does (returning to battery with an empty mag). Mine was staying racked back with a partially full mag (usually happened on the 3rd, 5th, or 7th round on all mags - I have 4 of them). If it continues to happen, I would recommend sending it back to SA so they can check to see what the problem is. Up to you.....
