What does Springfield mean when they say

The GAP round will fit in the 9 and .40 frame?

45 GAP - 4 inch & 5 inch Models

How do you give the XD big-bore stopping power without enlarging its trim, ergonomic frame? Simple you just make the cartridge shorter so it fits in the existing XD platform.

Introducing the new XD chambered in 45 GAP. This new cartridge gives you the same performance of the mighty 45 ACP, but the shorter overall cartridge length of the GAP round means it fits in the exact same XD frame as our 9mm and 40 S&W versions.

They didn't have to change the grip. The frame is the same (Or very similar) to the XD40 and XD9.

The .45 GAP OAL is short enough to fit in the same frame. That's all.

In other words, an XD for a .45 ACP would have required a new frame probably with a longer trigger reach. Not so with the .45 GAP.

I am guessing it's a little lighter since there is less metal to accomodate for the bigger round.

Yeah thats probably right. Id guess about the same weight though. So basically all youd need to do is change out the barrel and maybe the spring for a future conversion? Unless the barrel is bigger.

I imagine the barrel will have to be at least a little bigger, to accomidate the larger diameter bullet.
