I mostly shoot at 7 and 10 yards, but sometimes shoot at 15 and 25. I can generally shoot 2 to 3 inch groups at 7 yards and 3-4 inch groups at 10 yards. At 25 yards, I can put 30 to 40 rounds downrange and put all but a couple inside an 8 inch circle. The last time I shot IDPA, I shot 3 rounds each into 12 targets at 7 and 10 yards, some from behind cover. I only had two targets with any hits outside the 0 center mass and head zones. They were both -3 shots taken from behind cover.

Been doing my shooting at 25 yds. Mainly to finish getting some wear in so I can begin working up a load for accuracy. Right now, from a rest at 25 yds the last time out shooting at 9" paper plates the group from several magazines ate out a hole measuring 3" x 4". Next step is creeping up in velocity and try to find the sweet spot for the bullets I'm using. This grouping was at the recommended start charge for 231 power, so I'm hoping to see it close down.

Knowing that the XD45 tactical is not a target pistol. It gives me a kick to see what I can really get out of the pistol performance wise.

Man, what a sweet pistol!

Practice, practice practice

My first time to the range with my XD45 tactical I had a surprising number of people oogling over the accuracy of my gun. After I was done shooting, a couple guys came over to see what kind of gun I was shooting. Yup... Its a Springfield.

After 600 rounds, I've only had one empty shell hang up in the slide while it was ejecting. I think this was my own fault though... I was shooting with just one hand, so the pistol probably was 'flipping' a bit different than it usually does.

Overall... an excellant pistol.

I have fired several shots 1 handed now and not 1 has caused any malfunction. These were at meat and a few at 7 yards at a paper target, and so far 2 live foxes. The 2nd fox was today btw, mangey ugly thing too. I didn't use ear protection this time and about stunned myself, the echo off the hills was something else too.

So far I have done mostly at about 7 yards and seem to have more trouble getting tight groupings, feel like I have been treading water the last few times I massacred paper. Of course having the sun in my face doesn't help either LOL. I'd like to go to the indoor range again and try 15 feet first and see what my proficiency is for that. Then try 20 feet and 30 feet. No sun in the face and no wind and cold air at the indoor range.

I once tried 20 yards and couldn't even hit the target! The guy I was with that day was making groupings at 20 yards and he said he usually has to wear glasses but he forgot them that day. He also had not shot a handgun in like 10 years.

Oh and I cannot hit a raccoon's head at 20 feet with a .22. This with a 6 inch barrel. It IS a very small target though.

Oh last monday I went on a paper shooting spree, and managed to do a big grouping on a target with a little raccoon pic on it, hitting the center of the raccoon. However there were several wild shots all around it...

I dunno exactly how far I shoot from. I try to make sure it's further than 21 feet, though. I just tend to send the target out as far as I can while getting good groups. If I can consistently get inside 5", I move the target further out and try again until I hit the point where I think "this range needs practice."

The rule is: If you can hit a target at 50 feet away, you can hit it at 5 feet. But the reverse is not true.

I generally shoot 7-10 yards. And can shoot quickly and keep them at about 2 to 3 inches. Also sometimes we shoot at 25 yards, with slow fire just for practice. At 25 i can keep all 10 of 10 on a 6" Shoot-N-C target.

Being that most self defense situations happen between 7-10 feet, its best just to practice out to 10 yards, but start closer in the beginning, then slowly move it farther and farther away. But is still good to practice at farther ranges occasionally, just to work on accuracy and control.

Blake.

Generally 3-20 yards, emphasis on ~7-10 yards .

Its great to improve accuracy using typical target shooting range distances, however, you also should practice using non-traditional shooting situations. By this I mean shooting at a target 5 yards away without using your sights to aim, shooting while laying down in a variety of positions, shooting with your weak arm, etc. My brother-in-law is on the PD in his town and this is how they train. It helps you become comfortable shooting in a lot of different situations. I hope that doing so will better prepare me 'if' I ever need to be.

The difference is that you will presumably have a lot less time at 5 feet. You most likely won't even get to use your sights. I've seen people who can slowfire just fine at 50 feet but can't put 5 of 5 in a a paper plate at 5 feet if they have to start at low ready and some time pressure is applied.
