WTF?! I've lived in Florida most of my life, have gotten my CCW and studied up on all the pertinent laws, and my father is a retired sheriff's officer - and this is the first I've ever heard of such a law. Even when the laws stated you had to retreat, I had never heard of anything specifying a range.

Anyways - that aside, I shoot at between 3-25 yards at my indoor range, and 25 yards at my outdoor range. Occationally, I'll shoot at the extreme range for that range (40 yards indoor or 50 outdoor) as a control excerise, but the closer practice is more valuable for real-world application.

Normally I will shoot between 7-100 yards. At 7 yards it is about a 1" hole rapid fire. Out at 25 yards it is about 3-4 inch group. By the time we get to 100 yards we are looking at a 12" to 15" group. I see some key holing at 100 yards from bullet tumble. I really don't think there is a lot of energy at 100 yards from a 40S&W. BUT...that being said I think it would seriously alter someone's intentions to get hit in the chest with a 180 grainer doing 400-600 fps.

If I am shooting my S&W 686 .357 Magnum with 6" barrel from 100 yards using 180 silhouette bullets...then we get some action. Accuracy is better by a couple inches with groups showing about 9-10 inches. That load still wacks the steel trap with "authority".

Beyond 100 yards....switch to rifle.

Cheers
Mac.

most of my ammo goes through at 7-10 yards.. Then I'll back it up and shoot some at 15 and some at 25. I am a new shooter as well but at 25 I get them all within the 8 ring on the big silhouette target.

Self defense or murder?

I would imagine that the use of deadly force would be different depending on the particular situation, regardless of the range. As was stated multiple times earlier in this post, if a BG is firing at me from 20 yards away, I would most certainly aim to kill. Indiana has about the most forgiving laws in regards to home defense.

I usually shoot between 5 and 15 yards, including having the target come back at me from 25 yards out while shooting and switching clips like if someone was running straight at me.

I usually practice quick presentations and double-taps or hammers at 50 feet, and test loads for groupability at the same distance from a bench. Good loads go into one ragged hole about 3/4 inch across from either my 40 or 45 XD. 385 yards is the longest shooting I've tried so far with my Springfields. At that distance, I can pretty consistently get 5 rounds from a full mag on a B27 silhouette.

And for you misguided folks who think there is some sort of distance limit for self defense shooting...up your freakin' dosage! If someone is shooting at you from a hundred yards out with an AK, there is no obligation to wait until they close the distance before returning fire. Get a clue.

Amen brother.

I would adivise shooting at many distances varying from contact to 25 yds.
Odds are if you ever do get into a shoot, you are going to be smelling the BG's breath before you smell gunpowder from your gun. Probably your shot will be from retention and hope you have your mechanics down to muscle memory so that you don't shoot your andreniline filled empty weak hand off accidently. It happens.
