I typically shoot 7, 15 and 25 yards - and practice both left and right handed and occassionally kneeling (tougher than you think - at least on us seniors). That's very typical to most professional qualifying courses.

In PPC competition, those are the distances we shoot locally and we have to fire 12 rounds in 25 seconds and that time must include one magazine exchange.

For range work, it depends on which XD I am shooting. I typically shoot my XD45ACP at 7 to 10 yards and both my Tacticals at 5 to 25 yards. I don't typically shoot for measured groups with either - I concentrate on consistent center of mass hits with the former and consistent "A - zone" hits with the latter.

Depends on the state. IIRC in FL it's 25ft...since less than that is the distance that someone (LEO, lawyer. govmnt??) has determined a running person can still cover after being shot. As I recall they concluded that a knife is a bad thing if it hits you with the momentum of someone behind it . Now, having said that, if someone is pointing a gun at you from greater distance you don't have to let them shoot you!!!!!!!!!!!!

any where from 1yd out to abut 75 yds. I have been to this guy a couple times http://www.aptacademy.com/ and he shows you your gun is not just a 0-15 yard weapon. he trains out to 75 yards and beyond.. what if you are aginst a BG whith a rifle or shotgun, and all you have ever shot is out to 15 yards with your handgun, and thats all you have...

Most often 15 yards with all the shots in the killzone.

Every now and again I get a couple of flyers that aren't in the regular group. The group is about the size of an average dinner plate at 15 meters

Sometimes I shoot closer and further away, but I like to shoot a pistol at 15meters

Pistols owned :

Springfield XD 45acp Tac.
Walter PP .32caliber

in 5 months, i'm no better and in fact, think i'm getting worse. I really took to shooting cuz i thought i was really good. With my xd40 sub, i could group 2" up to 15 yards but the more i shoot, the worse it gets. I mostly shoot at 7 yards with the same results.

Today however, after 5 months of shooting, i'm closer to 3 to 4 ince groups with some off the wall flyers. What the heck, i thought i would get better and yet, my gun seems inconsistant now.

One thing that has changed is i no longer shooot my Sub rather i shot my new service. something happend to my trigger pull cuz i can't get back under 3". oh, i also drop the barrel now on occasion anticipating the bang. never did that before.

So far I'm working with my XD 4" .45ACP at 25 yards. I have been able to hit a 9" plate with a maximum spread of 4" in a 5 shot group.

Practice, practice, practice!

K, I don't care where you are, the "12 yards" (actually more commonly referred to as the 21 foot rule) thing is absolute BS. This all stems from some tests that show that within 21' (7 yards) a man can charge you and stab you repetedly before you (if you are typical) can draw your sidearm and fire. This has been held up as a MINIMUM standard. If a badguy is 21 feet away, has a knife and I believe that he is going to immediately try to stab me with it, I shoot him. Guess what? That same guy at 30 feet or 36' (12 yards) will probably meet the same fate. If he is charging, even with gun drawn my reaction time will probably allow him to move about 6-12 feet. The fact is that the 21 foot rule is a guideline, and nothing more. It will never stand up in any higher court. Even the 9th Circus Federal Court of appeals (the most liberal, and most overturned court in the nation) has held that the 21 foot guideline does not constitute a maximum distance for self defense. 12 yards is nothing in a fight.

Besides the above argument based on my training, experience and some legal research, lets look at this from another perspective. Suppose that the badguy has a gun (yes, Senators Feinstein and Kennedy, they still get them). What the hell would you be thinking to let him get within 12 yards of you if you have reason to fear for your safety when he is at 15 yards? You would be foolish to even consider the distance if your attacker is armed as well or better than you. To put it more simply: If badguy has a gun and seems to be going to use it, you need to use whatever force is needed to stop that threat. It doesn't matter at all what distance he is at. If we go back to the subject being armed with less than an obvious firearm (never assume), distance is our friend and is something that we can use to our advantage. If the badguy is determined to bridge that distance, the gap only allows you more time to aim. Distance is good.

I don't know where you are getting your legal information, but I would seriously look into that. Even if it is law (which I doubt, but I've been wrong before), it is "better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6".

To get back on topic, aim small, miss small. I have taken my XD40 5" out to 100 yards. I can keep them all on the silhouette without issue. At 50 yards, from a bench and taking my time, I can usually keep 10 out of 12 rounds on a 9" steel plate. That is a good day. The gun will outshoot me every time. There is a lot more inherant accuracy to modern handguns than most people want to admit. The lacking at distance is the limited sight radius afforded by a 3, 4 or 5" slide.

As always, just my $.02, enjoy (or don't... I don't care)

MC
