Koting an XD?

When they kote a XD or any blued gun, do they remove the old kote or kote right over it. i'm asking because i keep reading about melonite and was wondering if they remove it before putting on an after market kote.

Sorry, if this question is completely retarded.

I'm not sure about what type of kote (gunkote maybe) you're asking about refinishing with.

Duracoat prefers a "textured" surface (leave the factory finish on), but you have to take your time prepping/degreasing it so any residual oils and contaminents don't interfere with adhesion after you get it sprayed.

When I started refinishing firearms, I started out using duracoat because you didn't have to bake it and because I mostly did rifles, and obviously, they won't fit well in an oven.

Now that I'm breaking over into pistols more, I am going to get some Norrells and see if I like the overall refinish better than LCW's.

The finish is usualy stripped and the gun sand plasted and sometimes parkerized for best results.
I did my XD in Norrells. Took the old finish off, parkerized it then painted and baked.
