Wow. Thanks for sharing the story. I always go by the adage, "Learn by your mistakes." which recently changed to "Learn from other's mistakes."

But I have to admit, learning from your own mistakes is one of the quickest and easiest way to not repeat something. I agree that yelling or screaming at someone is usually ineffective...

... but I have a sneaking suspicion your friend, Josh, just learned a life-long lesson in firearms handling.

Cheers,
Dan

P.S. With all the safeties on the XD, especially the grip safety, kinda makes you wonder though.

As stated NDs don't "just happen" PARTICULARILY with an xd as it requires TWO things to be done in order to fire it #1 your finger must be on the trigger to depress the trigger safty #2 your hand MUST be gripping it sufficiently to depress the grip safty at the same time the finger depresses the trigger safty... I am an Arizona LEO and can assure you that had you been killed your friend would have been charged with second degree murder as premeditation could not be prooved BUT the fact that he was alert and conciously holding the weapon in a shooting grip with his finger on the trigger............ 2nd degree Murder all the way. Now with say a glock.... he coulda claimed the trigger "accidentally" got depressed possibly even by an inanimate object etc.. gettin off with a neg. manslaughter charge but with an XD he had to have loaded the weapon, chambered a round and then been holding it in a shooting grip pointing it in your direction........

I'd stick the xd9 into a part of his anatomy that would deffinetly prevent him being able to depress both safties at the same time!

Were the police dispatched or anything? My parent's neighbor accidentally cracked off a .308 round and it went through the wall, through the garage door and landed.....???

You probably could have heard it from a mile away. The police showed up and I think he was issued some sort of citation.

Well said. I would include in that learning who I should and should not be around in certain circumstances. A mispent youth taught me not to go to bars with hothead friends, go on roadtrips with folks who drink/dope and drive, or to hang out with "tough guys". All greatly increase the chance of a life changing, or ending "accident". The best way to avoid something unpleasant is to not be there in the first place.

Accidental?

I must disagree with your choice of catagories. This was a pure and simple negigent discharge. The ONLY way this gun will fire is: round in chamber, breech closed, grip safety depressed, finger on trigger, trigger depressed. The only accident associated with this nd was your association with this guy.

I won't say there is no such thing as an accidental discharge, but I don't see how this could be one. And "Acceidentally Negligent" doesn't make sense. Who would be negilgent on purpose?

This incident sounds like pure negilgence to me, and maybe a good time to reevaluate your friendship. If this sort of reckless behavior is a habit of your friend then maybe you need to weigh the worth of your friendship with possible hospital and legal bills.

Glad everyone is alright, just make sure everyone learns from what happened and don't let it happen again.

These things can and will happen to the best of us, if we get complacent. There are people that instruct firearms safety that have had AD/ND's. Never get too "comfortable" with your firearms. Your own gun doesn't care if it kills you or an intruder.

I'm glad that one has a happy ending.

Wink Loaded chamber (Live round In Battery)

Anytime you have a live round in battery there is always chance if the trigger is pulled your going to have a discharge. If the firearm is pointed at someone or they happen to be inline with the shot well you get my drift I hope.
