XD/GUN PROS! Help a newbie figure out my XD issue. (ammo?)
Hey there guys, I would much appreciate any insight that you can afford me without ripping me up too badly. Ill openly state that the issue below may very well have been user error.
Quick breakdown: XD40 (no mods) Wolf 40 S&W Ammo About two months ago I purchased 750rds of WOLF ammo from a friend. He had mentioned to me that it had given him a few problems in a couple of different pistols. Whatever, I got it for $50. Figured it was a pretty sweet deal. I can handle a few goof-ups. So I go to the range and start running through mags. I get to about the 30th round. It fires. Does not eject. Slide is STUCK closed. I am a strapping young lad and it took IMMENSE effort to crack on the slide again and lock it back. Next problem. Said spent casing is stuck INSIDE the barrel. Will not budge. Ended up having the handy range monitor guy pop it out for me, as I didnt want to damage my beautiful new (gently used) XD. He dislodged it, I began shooting again. Not 5 rounds later (!!!) it does it again. Exact same thing. Range guy asks if Im shooting WOLF and yep, I sure was. Basically this has happened about 10 times in total, each time with the pistol being absolutely spick and span beautifully cleaned. Is it fair to blame this on crappy ammo? Ill admit I havent fired anything through it since. Any ideas/suggestions/comments?? Thanks fellas! |

I've never used Wolf ammo but, at the gun shop/range that I normally shoot at, there is a big sign on the range door that says, "Absolutely NO Wolf ammo allowed!"

Even though I never used it, several people have told me to stay away from Wolf ammo. The gun nut down the hall at work, the gun counter sales guy at Academy, the gun counter sales guy at Cheaper Than Dirt, the range officer, etc.

Older wolf ammo used a finish on the case that would sometimes melt and cause the case to stick in the chamber supposedly the new stuff doesn't do this.

Reason
That person had a good reason for getting rid of the Wolf Ammo.

this is what the BOXOTRUTH found on their test with wolf through an AR15
"What's happening here is that the steel Wolf cases aren't expanding enough to form a good seal when fired, so some of the (dirty, carbon-filled) gasses are getting between the case and the chamber, causing a build up of carbon in the chamber that is far in excess of normal. Then, firing a brass case that DOES expand fully will result in that case being "glued" into the chamber by the carbon buildup." " This is certainly not a "bash" against Wolf. I still plan to shoot Wolf as it is the cheapest ammo I can buy. It shoots fine for plinking and I will continue to use it. I will simply be sure to use a chamber brush and carburetor cleaner on the chamber when cleaning it after a shooting session"

Sounds like the batch you have there has minimally-thin brass. I get the same problem using Magtech ammo in my .454.
The brass is conforming to the walls of your barrel so tightly that your extractor can't yank it. In my revolver, I wrap the cylinder in a cloth and brace a pen or pencil up through the front hole and against the back of the casing, then knock the other end of the pen(cil) against something. This pushes the casing out of the cylinder, rather than bending my manual ejector trying to get it to pull from the rear of the casing. In a semi-auto, I'd think this poses more risk of damage to the gun. I'd say just pull the bullets and powder and get some new brass & primers, or sell the batch to someone who will. T |

I've had fail to fires several times on Wolf Ammo in 7.62x39. I doubt it was the gun. But I still buy it since it's so cheap. I think next time try CCI Blazer. Cheap and still reliable.
I use Winchester White Box and it's so reliable in the XD.

Blazer is great ammo, I prefer it over WWB. Just shoots a lot better for me (.40S&W service). I'm more accurate, and recoil/muzzle-flip is noticeably softer.
