I show my son my guns when I clean them. I started doing that when he was two years old. He's now four years old and he knows three of Jeff Cooper's rules of gun safety.
He knows if he wants to see a real gun, he only has to ask me and I'll clear one and let him handle it for a few minutes as long as he doesn't violate any of Jeff Cooper's rules. This is to curb his curiosity. If your child is developed enough to know the very specific attributes of each Power Ranger (you parents know what I mean) then they are old enough to learn the rules of gun safety.

ive been hunting with my father longer than my memory serves so i have always been around firearms. i have been teaching my daughter the same. she is 4 and has always been around mine, and always will be. she helps when i clean the firearms by handing me the parts and ive got her now naming off the parts as she hands them to me. ive already got her shooting a bb gun. of course i have to hold it for her and help her aim. its great blowing up balloons and letting her pop them.

I started at about 8, and started each of my kids in that age range.

I take the guns out of lock down and hold them in my hand. I have the boys to sit on my lap and hold the gun. I ask them if they have any questions and I show them how they work. I tell them that they are not to touch the guns unless I am there to help them. I think this take the mystory out of the gun. I started my youngest at 4 years old shooting a .22 with me holding the gun and him sighting it. They are learning the safety rules also. I have the other boys which are both 11 shoot .30-30 at paper to get ready for the deer hunt this year. I think that if they are old enough to understand that is when you start teaching them. Each child is different. |

I began teaching my two daughters when they were 8 and 7.
They're 16 and 15, now. Neither of them really LIKES guns that much, but at least I know that they: A. Know how to handle them safely B. Can shoot well enough to defend themselves.

LOTS of GOOD info on this thread guys, Thanks. My son has never seen my gun and wont for a while... The only thing he knows of guns is what he sees on TV, And my wife telling him "Daddy went to the Gun Show or Daddy went to go shoot guns" I am VERY safe when it comes to guns.. I will be applying for my CCW license in the spring, and am nervous about carrying with a round in the chamber. My son also loves to see videos on the puter of people shooting guns. I had a clip of a guy shooting 2 Glock 18's with 2 33rnd mags in like 4 seconds, he would laugh @ it.
I saw a handgun safe @ wal-mart this morning when I went to buy ammo. It was only like $40, I might pick it up this weekend. Jeremy |
