Nervous when carrying XD cocked and ready to go?
I know it has the grip safety and the trigger safety, but the thought of accidently grabbing it and pulling the trigger to fast worries me. I don't carry yet.
How do you guys feel when carrying an XD that is ready to shoot?

I don't carry yet, but I'm going to imagine they feel perfectly OK with doing that. Like many have said, don't carry until you are ready to carry with one in the chamber. With an empty chamber your gun is no good in defensive situations. What you really need to do, is practice drawing your gun from holster while it's cocked, and unloaded. Do that many times and just get to the point where you figure out how to draw it without getting your finger in the trigger to soon. And in the end, if you don't feel safe carrying a certain gun with one in the chamber, it's time for you to get a carry gun that you do feel safe with.

Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you are ready to destroy what's in front of you.
Thoughts about carrying a gun not chambered ready to go is like carrying no gun at all. Why even bother? I carried my Glock, XD, as well as other formats without any problems. Come out to the matches Boma. You'll build confidence in drawing and firing..It'll teach you alot about trigger/finger dicipline. |

One question. Are you 100% sure you will have the use of both hands, and the capability and the time to rack the slide in a SHTF situation? If not, your weapon is only a weight on you hip.
Mental conditioning, training, practice, and finger discipline are the safeties you need. Mechanical safeties are only a back-up. The only time I want to have to touch the slide of my gun is if there is a malfunction. |

Lots and lots of practice will muscle train you to grab with your trigger finger straight. Unload it and practice your drawing over and over til it's just 2nd nature.

I carry my XD with one in the chamber. I feel totally safe about it and would not carry it any other way.
My previous every day carry gun was a Beretta 92F Compact. I carried it with one in the chamber and the manual safety OFF for 17 years with no problems at all.

when i first started carrying for work i was so scared. i mean i been around guns and stuff but never had to carry. when they got me to carry a beretta on my thigh i was so worried that a AD would happen when i holstered my weapon. in the begining when i started carrying concealed it was the same thing but i was happy its a xd. nothing against glock but me personally i have seen way more AD when holstering then any other gun ever. i have seen holsters snag the trigger and many other object when holstering. they are very good guns but there not my gun of choice of carry. when i holstering my xd i even move my thumb to where the firing pin indicator is so im not touching ( or activating ) the thumb safety so im more confident in holstering and carrying in condition one.

From the pic in your avatar it appears that you are blessed with kids. If there was a situation where you needed your gun for defense of self or family, what are the chances that you will be using your off hand to hold or control a child?
I really started carrying constantly when I had my kids just a few years ago. I spent a great deal of time shooting one handed while holding something in my arm to mimic holding one of my kids. IMO, you also have a much greater chance of inducing a stoppage by not fully racking the slide to try and chamber a round under stress than having an ND. Just practice, practice, practice as has been stated. You will get more comfortable over time. Just be careful of the complacency bug. |
