That's never something I've worried about, and don't think I ever will. I'd say shoot it at your own pace. It's metal, and it's a gun. It's made to handle high pressures and high temperatures.

Although, that's just me, I'm sure someone on here will say that's a no-no.

Not sure what you mean.
Are you talking about rapid fire with only very brief delays to insert a fresh mag?

I once emptied 3 15rd mags and 5 10rd mags (96rds) through my XD-9 Service as fast as I could. The barrell was too hot to touch, but it was not red or anything like that. I would assume that accuracy would suffer, but since XD are "minute of bad guy" anyway, I don't think you would notice unless you were shooting from a Ransom Rest.

Its a fun test, but pointless.

I put a couple hundred rounds down the barrel in serial one afternoon to torture test my XD after I got it. Zero malfunctions and definitely did not get so warm that it was uncomfortable to shoot. Was definitely warm enough for me to feel the difference, though.

When at a training range as a LEO, I did a similar torture test/shooting drill with my glock 22 .40. I fired three high caps(15rnds), five 10 rounders and two of the 30 rounders in very immediate succession.
155 rounds, in less than (i'm guessing) three minutes, maybe four.

It was a fun drill, and other than a super hot barrel (not glowing hot), the gun was fine at the time, and ever since.

I've never had enough handgun ammo on hand to worry about it.

Just this afternoon, I put 700 rounds through my XD45 as fast as I could load the magazines. Only had 2 mags though. It got hot, but I think problems occured from 700 rounds and no cleaning more than from the heat.
