The joy of XD sight removal
Wonderful. Took both XDs to 3 shops today to have the sights replaced and all 3 couldn't get the factory ones off. Now I have to cough up shipping and pay to ship them to CC or Springfield to have what should have been a 15 minute process and be without the slides for weeks. ARGGGGHHHH!!!!
Almost bought a Taurus 145 just to spite the XD gods today while at the last shop. |

The XD sights are notorious for being a pain in the rear to remove. I have talked to a couple of gun shops about this. Springfield might be the only way in your case. It sucks, but it's true.

AJames doesn't seem to have any problems replacing XD sights. I sent him my XD40SC slide for new sights and a Duracoat and had it back in a week.

Good to know that no one in northern Nevada can work on XD sights

brass punch, brass hammer and about 30 minutes total. it's all in the angle that you put it into your vice and how you hit the sights. i've done 4 sets now. the first one took me over 4 hours to do, until i figured out the right method for extraction. i've slipped one time and did some minimal scarring, but was fixed with some blueing touch up cream.

Do a search on sight removal on this forum. There is a trick to it. They come off only one way, and if you try to go the other way, they are a #$*%^ to remove.

when holding the gun looking through the sights as if you are going to shoot. To remove them push the sight from the right hand side to your left hand side. see pic...
A search would be useful as well. ![]() |

I've heard of people putting the slide in the freezer first for a while.
I would NEVER even attempt to do my own sights. Either Ajames or Rich can deal with it. They know what they are doing and if something goes wrong (with them it wouldnt) they are also refinishers so you are set either way. If you buy the sights from Ajames he even installs them for free. I'm pretty sure if you get him the slide on say, a Tuesday, you would have your XD back in hand by Friday. Guys...stop torturing yourselves with these sights and let the Pro's handle it!

The sights can actually be put on and taken off in either direction.....IE not taper in the dovetail. If you it your self you run the risk of breaking your vials. If you do send it out ask your smith questions IE will they warranty their work.
