(UPDATE)Embarrassed to post this but i had a ND into my hand

UPDATE
Thought i would give an update to how i was doing. The hand has healed very well. Except for my bodies tendency to form keloids (scars that raise above the skin) I have no pain in the hand, complete range of motion, and there was no loss of feeling at all.

All in all i was very lucky and nothing but good has come from this accident. I have learned a very good lesson as has everyone that knows about it.

ok i am a little Embarrassed to post this, but hopefully someone can learn from my careless mistake

So this weekend my buddy got a new xd9 subcompact. He was already at my house when i got home, When he handed it to me i assumed it was unloaded since he did not say anything.(this was a very careless mistake on my part)

well held it for a second, and then went to take it apart, not sure why i wanted to strip it down, but i did.

So i pulled and locked the slide back, lifted the front lever, and let the slide back forward. (there was no bullet in the chamber at first, but when i racked the slide it put one in) then as you all know you have to "dry fire" the gun inorder for the slide to come off. So i did, and as i did, i had my hand on the slide to pull it off. Since this was a subcompact the bottom part of my right hand was slightly infront of the barrel, and the gun went off...

I was completely stunned, if anyone has had an AD or a ND before, you know you sit there for a second, wondering what the hell just happened. Nothing but silence for a few seconds.

My first thought was where did the bullet go? But one thing i can say is that i am in the habit of keeping the gun pointed at the ground when i take them apart, and thank god i am.

The 9mm hollow point went through the bottom part of my hand, and through my dinner table.

Once i realized the bullet could not have hurt anyone else, is when i noticed how bad my hand was injured.

I immediately got a towel and wrapped around it. And thankfully my friend and brother were there to take me to the hospital.

My hand did not hurt that bad, i think i was more freaked out how it looked.

I past out for about 30 seconds on the way to the hospital, and then again in the ER waiting room.

They got me back to see the doctor pretty fast, and i received 8 stitches. But it was not a normal sutures. The doctor had to give me "loose sutures" since alot of the bottom part of my hand was missing.

All i can say is that i am very lucky, this whole situation could be alot worse. And it makes me feel like such an idiot, that i could let something like this happen.

I always thought that i would never let this happen to me. But i have learned a very hard lesson. And i hope someone here can learn from my mistakes as well.

This first picture is a little blurry as it was taken with my phone. This is without the stitches

That really sucks, but thanks for owning up to it on here. One thing I always practice, is when someone hands me a gun, I check the chamber and make sure no bullets are in the mag. Even if they just checked it before they handed me it, I check it again and expect they do the same back in return. You're lucky you didn't have it pointed down toward your leg or foot or something, or a worse part of your body.

One of the major rules of firearm safety, is ALWAYS assume a gun is loaded and keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.. which you thankfully did. I double check that my gun is empty before I start to take it down for cleaning.

Ouch. Looks like you will have a nice scar as a reminder. Glad to see the damage was relatively minor, could have been a lot worse if you hadn't kept it pointed in a safe direction.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Hope you make a full recovery. And most importantly, thank God that no one got killed.

I make it a general rule to always check any gun that is handed to me or any gun that I pick up. And at home the only time the gun has a loaded magazine in it is when I go to sleep where the gun sleeps in arms reach of me.

Sorry about the injury. Your buddy is also at fault. It was his gun and it is his responsibility to show you that it is clear. Once you take it from him, it is then your job to check it again.

In the end, fault doesn't not matter. What matters is that it was just your hand and nothing more.

That hurts just looking at it. Sadly, I think you are the 3rd forum member to post such pics. You gonna catch some heat!! However, nothing can be said that you have not already thought. I'm just real happy you (and your buddy) are still with us to be able to post this.

I've always just made sure that dropping the magazine was always the very first step in clearing the gun, *then* rack and check...

Just because I'm curious and I'm fairly sure it's been asked before, how did the gun fare with fireing while the slide stop was up?

There’s nothing much that I can say that will ease your pain or embarrassment. We are human and as such...fallible. I am grateful that you aren't hurt anymore seriously. Learning can be quite painful at times.
Get well!
