When does wear and tear become something else?

First, this thread is safe for 56K but a 56K warning if you click on any of the linked photos in this thread. I have taken these photos with a high resolution camera and not scaled them down or cropped them in order to ensure the best integrity of the photos for review by this community.

That having been said, here is the problem:

Last september, I purchased a new XD40, it was shipped to me in perfect new-in-box condition. Since the middle of september, the XD has been fired just over 1000 times with another 100 or so dry fires during which snap caps were cycled through the action. After about 1100 cycles, my XD is showing wear at levels that I am concerned about. Further, my LEO father in law dropped by after shooting a possible on his semi-annual qualification (thats a perfect score for those who dont know). He was looking at my new blackhawk CQC holster and then started looking at my XD and indicated that he thought it was significant wear, far more than should be for the small number of rounds I have fired through it.

My question is this, at what point does wear on a handgun go from "normal wear and tear" to "defects in workmanship and/or materials" for purposes of the limited warranty. I dont want to call springfiled, let them know that i think my handgun is showing excessive wear, send it in, only to be called back a week later and told that even though the finish is obviously crappy, its not really faulty per-se and so they wont do anything about it, oh and shipping is on my own dime too...

Photos of my XD External

Photos of my XD Internals

Some additional details:
This XD is not carried for any kind of duty or CCW at this time.

When my XD is not actively in use, it is locked in a sealed, dry, padded, handgun safe made by isteki.

I live in a dry climate of colorado and this XD has not been exposed to any kind of precipitation.

Given all this information, do I have a problem that the warranty would cover (as I am the first owner)? Should I call springfield? I love my handgun otherwise but I have been very disappointed with the standard brurinol (SP?) finish.

well, i'm having some issues looking at the pictures up close... i click on them and get a file not found error...

i know my XD .40 service (purchases 01/05, maybe 2500-3000 rds through) has that wear ring about 1/2 inch from the edge of the barrel. mine has some typical wear around the end of the slide from holstering/reholstering, etc. can't really appreciate anything else from the small pics, though.

sounds like you've been doing everything right and treating it well. if you're not happy with it, definitely let springfield know. a courteous, intelligent, informed approach/case (like the one you made) will probably take you pretty far. given the rise of the XDs and springfield's desire for them to hold up next to Glock, Sig, etc, they're gonna make things right. they have a reputation for excellent customer service and i'd be surprised if they didn't make things right.

let us know how it goes.

Pictures should work now. Sorry, the long and short is that i left one digit of the picture number off of the link URL. Also, where there is alot of glare, thats because its the flash and ambient light reflecting off bare metal.

I think if I call them, I might ask them to take a look at my grip safety and its interaction with the trigger mechanism because every once in a while I get what I would call a "chunky" cycle where the gun still functions but there is a brief hesitation, kind of a click sound, and then continues to work fine.

i don't know... i guess i'd say my gun looks similar internally and externally. i don't necessarily appreciate the problems with the gun. looks pretty normal to me. the external shots look fine.

is the gun still shooting well?

again, i say if you're less than happy, contact springfield... or bring it to a gunstore and see what they think. (just for general impressions... people at gun stores sometimes seem to tell you the craziest things).

On the first pic of the second row showing the locking block... right in the center of the rear portion of it, there's a dent/indentation... is that normal?

That's suppossed to be there. It's a clearance cut for the next round in the magazine to move to the main ramp on the barrel.

The wear looks perfectly normal. What type of gun does your father in law use??
