i can squeeze 17 rounds into my 16 round mag, is that bad?

i can comfortably put in a 17th round into my 16 capacity magazine. is this bad for the spring at all? is it indicitive of a faulty sping? it is a 9mm if it makes a difference.

I would think it's more of an issue with the ejector, fully inserting the over charged mag with force could hit the ejector...

i've aleady did a few magazines packed with 17 just today. it worked fine.

i started to do it accidentally when i was using the 100 count WWB, which are loose in the box. i would simply load the mag without counting until i couldn't put anymore in. first couple times i thought i was going crazy because i thought i was miscounting my shots.

I did that once with my 45acp model, but the other way around. I loaded 13 rounds in the mag, and then I fired 12 rounds (or so I thought), and the slide locked back and it was empty. I guess I just miscounted, unless it is the mysterious disappearing bullet.

there was another post about this awhile back...

i had one thought/concern: if you cram extra rounds into the mag, you're overcompressing the spring. if you do this long enough or consistently enough, i'd be worried the spring would lose some of its elasticity and you might have some problems with last few rounds feeding (b/c the spring doesn't have the force to push them up far enough for the slide to grab)

for range mags it isn't a problem... i wouldn't do it w/ any mags for CCW, though.

I definitely would not store them overfilled that's for sure. At the range for a short time, it probably does not matter. However, knowing that it possibly could damge the mag, is it worth it? It's just another round on top of the 16 you already have.

storage has no effect on spring life. read around on some technical sites (or in books if you prefer)--the cycling of a spring is what leads to deterioration and shortens the life of the spring. they're already in a half-compressed state just being in an empty mag. do you disassemble all your magazines when you're done at the range too? if not, they're already sitting for extended periods of time slightly compressed.

static states do not affect spring life. cycling through compression/release is what causes them to fail (years) down the road.

I got one more round in my 9mm mag than it was supposed to take. I couldn't insert the mag in the well because the sides of the mag had swelled out from the extra round.

I actually got 18 in mine one day, it made it to hard to stick the magazine in though unless the slide is locked back and I wouldn't recommend slamming it in as it might damage the ejector.
