Going to get the Xd-9 sub-compact

First post on this site. Like the forum and all the info exchange. Keep up the good work!!

After looking for a CC Pistol I have chosen the XD-9 sub compact. I now have a XD-9 Tactical that I use for league and I love it. It has never failed me and I just keep getting better and better at shooting it as my scores get better. The only thing I don't like about the sub compact is the very short grip. I like it for the fact it is small, but I don't because my pinkie does not fit. I'm guessing the Pearce grip extension is a good buy for me? Is it an easy install on the mag?

Also I have been talking to many dealers and come to find out that the XD's are coming with a new coating (starts with an "M" I think
Melinite???) I have seen some in the shops but I don't know it they all are like that or just some versions. I guess this coating is hard as nails and would really like my carry gun to have it to reduce wear on the finish. I have looked the the Springfield site and brochures and they don't mention it at all which I find odd since I would think it would be a big deal. Any info you have would be great!!

The xd45 is the only current model with the melonite finish.. and it does reduce wear greatly, and rust issues. There has been some rumor I believe that some other new models now have the armory kote from springfield, which isn't as good as melonite, but it's better than the original finish the guns had. I'm not positive whether that's true or not though, about any of them having that finish. As far as melonite goes, maybe they will start putting it on all their guns sometime this year or next year. Until then, it's just put up with the current finish, or wait until they have the new guns out with a new finish.. if they even plan on offering that on the other models.

As far as the pierce extension goes, I think it just replaces the base plate on the mag, but I'm not positive. I wouldn't imagine it's anything hard to install, it either slips on, or replaces the base plate.. which is easy to remove.

Good choice. You'll love it. Get some good rounds and it will be a very potent defensive pistol.

The Pearce grips are a piece of cake to install and they extend the grip well but of course don't add any capacity to the magazine. The subcompact kit comes with one mag that is already extended that holds 16 rounds. I like that and I bought an extra one from Springfield. They are expensive thought. $35 or so if I remember. That extension makes the subcompact grip about as long as a service model.

The armory kote is an extra finish that you can buy from Springfield's custom shop. No XD's come with it standard. The 45 is the only one that comes with the Melonite finish. I don't know any news for sure that says that the Melonite will come standard on other firearms as of yet.

Or do like I did and get it in bi-tone.

in my case, bitone, blued, 9mm, .45, sub or tactical...they're all the same price, and since the bi-tone had the best rep for not rusting, bling!

Yup!! If I can't find one with the melonite finish I will just get a Dura Coat finish put on it. I have a friend that has been using the Dura coat and he really likes it. I will not wait to buy because the longer I wait the more the price goes up. Heck the SC will cost more than my Tactical did!!

Well, I just called a local gun shop (bill's gun shop & range) and they said that all XD have the melonite finish so I will have go down there and check it out. Why doesn't SA put this info out?? I would think it is a big deal.
