Finally had a FTE (i think)
Sorry if this should be posted in the range report section but I just wanted to say that I experienced my first FTE w/ my XD9. I've owned it about a year and have never taken it down completely to clean. Just the basic cleaning--I've had nearly 5k rounds through it so I'm not worried but was wondering what would have cuased it? I was using reloads from the range (which may be the isssue) or can limp-wristing cause it? Also, for the first time ever, in the same session, the slide failed to lock back at the end of the mag--this, I believe, was caused by me limp wristing, but again, can this be caused by anything else? Thanks for the info..

I believe limp wristing can certainly cause FTE. I have no experience to say whether or not the reload ammo could, but I suppose it might occasionally, especially maybe if that round had a weak charge. As far as the slide not locking back at the end of the mag, is it possible you may have had your thumb on the slide lock? I'm not sure if limp wristing would cause that to not work or not. If it's the only time it's happened, and didn't happen after that time.. I would be likely to think it was something I did, such as accidentally having my thumb on the slide lock lever.

Limp wristing can steal the impulse from the recoil spring, thus shortening the slide cycle, stovepiping the brass and not locking the slide back on the last round. It sounds like a definite possibility, IMO.

Shooting reloads always requires that you have different weight springs for your gun to account for the lack or excess of charge. And if you are shooting someone elses reloads, you have no idea what your dealing with. Too little powder, bullet not seating to the correct depth. I took some of my real light loads to the range one day and they were barely ejecting out of my 1911. I forgot my spring assortment that day. The gun had the stock spring in it. My reload empties were kind of rolling out of the chamber and dropping at my feet. It was just shy of not ejecting them at all.

Thanks for the replies. Since this has only happpened once (or twice if you count both incidents seperately) I'm not too worried and I believe it was a combination of me limp wristing and the reload ammo from the range. From your guys' opinions' it's not due to the lack of a major cleaning (as I said in the first post I've yet to take down the whole gun and give it a thurough cleaning--I'm kinda scared)? I clean the gun regularly after I shoot it--but not a major clean--just getting all the "crap" i can see.. Thanks again..
