Snap caps in an XD?
Can I use a snap cap in my XD without having to reload each time I pull the trigger? I've never had a striker fired gun before.

No, U will have to pull the slide back just enough to recock the gun after every pull. I do not think U will have to cycle the slide completely - making the snap cap eject.

Just pay attention to how far you have to pull the slide back to make the cocked indicator stick out. It's maybe 3/4" or so. Is it somewhat annoying compared to a DAO where you can continue to pull the trigger without doing anything else? yes.. but it's the only way you can do it with this gun. You won't have to eject the snap cap, just pull the slide back just enough to cock the gun, and you're good to go.

You'll have to pull the slide back slightly. But if you're only dry firing in the home, you don't need snap caps as the firing pin won't fire without a round in the chamber. It will simply decock but the weight of the pull is the same.

xanadu-
are you sure about that? i'm pretty sure XD doesn't decock... the firing pin is released and slams forward as if there were a round there. it just doesn't encounter anything. technically, this isn't the best thing to do to your gun but so long as you don't do it too much, you shouldn't have a problem. (even if you did, i think it'd be covered under warranty b/c there's no way springfield would know the circumstances under which things broke). anyways, i've NEVER heard reference to the XD having a decocker. can anybody clarify? |

From what I understand, there is no decocker on the XD line.

Maybe I'm off, but the way I understand it, if you pull the slide back and it sets(cocks) the striker, pulling the trigger without a round in the chamber releases the striker and does not reset it. Doesn't this mean it is decocked? I think this is what xanado22 was getting at. They didn't mean decocked as in easing the striker out of cocked by some other way other then pulling the trigger.
Was that clear as mud? Jeff

What he said is the firing pin won't fire without a round in a chamber, and that's totally false. The firing pin WON'T fire, only if you DON'T pull the trigger. If you pull the trigger, the firing pin will fire, and you will be required to pull the slide back a little bit to reset the firing pin so you can dry fire again. If you want to practice finding where trigger reset is, you can do this. Pull the trigger all the way, and keep it held to the back. Rack the slide just enough to cock it and let it back forward, make sure you still have the trigger depressed all the way. Now, slowly start letting the trigger go forward, you will eventually hear a click and that's how far you have to let the trigger forward in order to fire another show. Now you can pull the trigger after you hear that click, and you will release the firing pin.

Jed is right, you pull the trigger, and the firing pin strikes, round chambered or not.
Also if you read the XD manual, it states dry firing is OK, since you are forced to dry fire every time you field strip the gun. Still, old habits die hard, and I usually run snap caps when I dry fire mine as well. |
