At least you get a little green card that says Michigan State Police SAFETY INSPECTION CERTIFICATE. It's all part of the handgun registration scheme in Michigan. For retail sales in Michigan, the standard process (for non CPL holders) is to pull a handgun purchase permit from the local LE agency, purchase the handgun, then return to the agency that you pulled the permit from (with the handgun) for a "Safety Inspection." (CPL holders do not have to pull a permit, however, they do need to present the handgun for the "Safety Inspection"). My experience has been that a clerk in the records department verifies the serial number and barrel length, then enters information into a three-part form: one part stays on file at the LE agency, one is sent to the Michigan State Police, and the third is the SAFETY INSPECTION CERTIFICATE. I'm not certain how serial number and barrel length equates to a "Safety Inspection", but whatever. At least you don't get fingerprinted anymore to pull a permit.

Out of curiousity, what part of the state are you in? (If you are in the Detroit area, the better question is what gun shop to avoid?)

mrreddog,

That kinda sucks that the dealer did not offer to replace it for you. I remember about 4 years ago I bought a new Para Ordnance P14-45 and right out of the box I had nothing but problems, The dealer I deal with has a indoor range and out of the first 100 rounds I had over 50 FTF and FTE's, I took the gun up to the counter and the owner took it back to the range and it messed up on him a few times. He went into the back room and got a brand new one off the shelf and said try this one out. I put 100 thru it flawlessly, so he re did the paper work and I ended up walking out with that one. I guess I was pretty lucky I had a dealer that would do that. Your dealer should have offered the same service and just traded you out right and sent the XD back. Just my 2 cents, Dave

Here's another thought. Send the slide back to SA and have them put on night sights. Problem solved...less $100.

Wow. Michigan sounds like a pain in the ass. I like the south more and more each day.

I've got a bi-tone 40 service and made some decent, 2"+, scratches on the slide from take down. I was upset at first but I got over it.

I wouldn't make any sort of commitment to the place from which it was purchasd or to S.A. for a product like that. You never know what you get now n days.

Honestly, how thoroughly did you look over the gun before you took it home?
