Double feed

At the indoor range shooting my XD40 sc when the gun jammed up hard--Slide was slightly out of battery, and wouldn't move more than a tiny amount in either direction. I couldn't get it cleared, the range officer couldn't get it cleared, so he took it to the store gunsmith. When I got it back, he said that it was a double feed, one round in the chamber, and one directly behind it. Shot another 100 rounds or so, no more problems.

If it ever happens again, how do I clear it?

Is there anything I can do to prevent double feeds? I field strip and clean after every trip to the range, and I was using just gun oil to lube. Someone suggested that I switch to gun grease--I'm going to try that, but I'm open to other suggestions.

I had the same thing happen to me about 6 weeks ago. I mean it was locked up tight. What ammo were you using? Mine happened with some reloads I bought at the range.
I have just tried to make sure the chamber is really clean, and 400+ rounds later I havent had a problem.

Most Class 3 failures (Double feeds) can be cleared by:

1) Immeadiately lock back the slide.
2) Drop the magazine. (to let the second round fall out the magwell)
3) Cycle the slide two or three times minimum to clear the weapon.
4) Seat a magazine and cycle the weapon.
5) Fire the weapon.

I have never had a pistol not lock back when I have done this and this is the only way I know that will clear this kind of failure quickly.

I wasn't as organized as that., but I don't think that would have cleared this particular failure. The slide wouldn't move enough to lock back, but I did drop the magazine, and tried to cycle the slide with the magazine removed. Didn't help.

What I was told by the instructor I took a class from is this.

1: Lock the slide back

2: Drop the mag, don't be afraid to pull it hard out of the gun because sometimes you may have to, it can be jammed in there good with a double feed.

3: Let the round in the chamber fall out

I paid $45 for an hour lesson which included range time, and classroom. Was a one on one lesson, and it was basically about any problem I was having at the moment and on top of that he showed me lots of basic stuff about the gun, how to clear jams, etc. It was well worth it, as now I do not feel clueless on how to respond to those situations should they ever come up, especially in a defensive situation.
