.40 fail to fire, pin hitting side of primer.
I have recently bought an xd 40 sub compact and love the gun but i have had one issue that has happened about 5-10 time in about 1000 rnds. First of all..ALL of my spent brass shows that the pin is not hitting the primer dead center, it looks like it hits directly on the side/rim of primer then slides to "close to center". I am using federal American Eagle ammo. This has only caused an issue of actually not firing a max of ten time.. Just wondering if anyone has has similar problem. I may call SA and see what they say, and as far a i can tell it looks as though the gun a pin are all ok and the pin looks like it is in the center of the block where the case sits. n-e-waze enuf jabberin'

Could be the ammo if it is bulk but if you are buying separate boxes everytime you go shoot then it seems to be the gun. You could try different ammo but then you'd have to go through another 1000rnds or so.
Probably would be best to send it to SA with maybe some of those spent brass. |

I have a .40 service model and i have had that happen to me once in 500 rounds. The firing pin sig looks the same as yours. Post up what SA has to say about this. Good luck!

This problem occurs during ejection and is a timing issue. The firing pin is still extended slightly while the cartridge is being ejected. The pin is hitting dead center of the primer and then as the spent shell is pushed out, the firing pin leaves that mark as it slides across the primer. I've seen it on other guns I've owned and is usually not a problem.

I'm not so sure this is happening on ejection..
My first thought was the same when I saw the spent cases..but when It happened to me and looked at the "dud" "if i am remembering correctly" there was only a mark on the edge of the primer and i was able to put it back in and fire without a problem. I did not happen to me the last time I went shooting but I will be going again fri or sat and when it does happen I will remember to take a closer look and even take a picture. "if I am right about it hitting only the side" that way I can give that info to SA. And yes i have been usind different boxes of ammo every time i go... i would shoot about 2-3 boxes of fresh ammo at a time.

I'm with tomswift on this one. It is most likely the pin hitting center and then dragging across. I've seen that on many cases I've picked up at the range. If the firing pin is actually striking the primer off center, then it could be an issue of the slide being slightly out of battery. You need to rule this out as it is a dangerous condition.

Most all of my casings have "smeared hits". They have for like the last 10,000 rounds. And will continue to.

Doesn't appear to me that the guy's talking about primer flow/smeared hits. If his primers are being struck off-center, there's only one explanation: Out-of-battery firing.

That is correct. Out of battery.
The XD is a single action. The recoil spring has to overcome the force of the striker spring to hold the slide in battery. It is EASY for the slide of the XD to be pulled out of battery. |

I am usually the last person to recommend a call to the manufacturer, but in this case I think it is a must. What you are decribing is not normal, and it does not sound like firing pin drag.
