Safety issue

I'm a new member and new to the XD. The manual says "To fire the gun you must properly hold the gun and depress the grip safety and then put your finger on the trigger to depress the trigger safety and pull the trigger." I understand that perfectly. It then goes on to say "When the grip safety is disengaged the gun will fire if the trigger is pulled." Does this mean that if I removed the gun from the holster and depressed the grip safety, then decided not to shoot and re-holstered, that the gun could actually be fired just by squeezing the trigger? I know it would be hard to shoot it on purpose without depressing the grip safety, but what if something caught on the trigger while it's in the holster? Am I just a dummy, or is this a little unsafe or am I just misunderstanding what I am reading?

No. They have to be pressed at the same time. Try it. Pull the trigger with out depressing the grip saftey. Nothing will happen. Depress the grip saftey, let go, them pull the trigger. Nothing.

And just to be safe, make sure it's not loaded when you try.

Try holstering your XD, without disengaging the grip safety.

It means that the grip safety is ON when it is not depressed. When you depress it, you are disengaging the grip safety. When you let go, it goes back on.

Thanks

I appreciate your quick replies. I've been shooting 1911's, Ruger P Series and others for years, but this is the first time I've picked up and XD. I would rather be safe than sorry.

If something were to catch the trigger and depress the trigger safety and pushed the trigger far enough back, and you had the grip safety depressed.. yes the gun would go off. I think when reholstering you just need to make sure you try and keep your hand off the grip safety if it worries you. If you are reholstering your gun, unless you are a cop I don't think you are going to be in too much of a hurry so you should be able to take your time.

I was debating with myself, the need to post the same thing.

And rman, your not a dummy. At least not by the post you put on here. I don't really know you so I can't really say if you are or not I guess. Just messing with you.

If you are new to handguns or at least this style of handgun, I'd say handle your XD (or any new firearm for that matter) a lot while it is not loaded with ammo, and get to know it well before you fire it with live ammo. You don't really want to be learning a lot of new things with it while firing it for the first time. You should know the parts of it and how they work before you go out. Rack the slide, dry fire it some, take it apart and put it back together a couple of times. Most importantly, if you have more questions, ask on here. There are a lot of very freindly people with a lot of experience with their XD's, that will be glad to share info with you.

Sorry, you posted this reply while I wrote mine. I see you are not new to handguns. Well, I guess the only part of my first post that applies is the last two sentences.
