friend borrowed XD

Guys,

I let a friend borrow my XD9SC just the other day. He owns a Beretta 92FS. Anyway, I forgot to tell him how to remove the slide for cleaning.

Here's what he did: he locked the slide back and then raised the disassembly lever. He then used the slide stop lever to bring the slide forward (yikes!) instead of slowly bringing the slide forward. Then, he tried to pull the slide off (before pulling the trigger). Then he realized the gun was cocked and he needed to pull the trigger. Once the striker fired, the slide came off.

He told me all this when he gave the gun back to me. I checked everything out, and nothing seems broken. Is there anything I should check to see if anything was damaged? I don't want to fire any rounds through it until I know it's safe.

Should be fine.. dry fire it a few times. Or use snap caps. The recoil spring probably did its job as it was still locked in and dampened the forward slam.

It probably didn't hurt the gun. A couple years ago when I bought my XD, at Gander the guy behind the counter field stripped it that way. He was pretty well versed in guns and knew a lot about the XD and the Glock. At the time I knew a lot about Glocks since I owned one a G19 and we bsed about my Glock 19 vs the XD-9 I was looking at. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it because when he did it I asked if it is ok to do that. He said that he had demoed the gun for several months and did it about every day, with no signs of damage. The gun looked prestine to me after field stripping it. Personally, I let it go down slowly, because I'm a wuss and will always be afraid of breaking it.

It should be fine, the only thing you would need to check is if any springs were damaged. Anything else in the gun should not break simply by doing that. If a gun broke the first time I disassembled the gun the wrong way, I would get rid of that gun. It's obviously not a gun that would hold up to that many live round being fired from it.

Tell your friend the gun is ruined. Tell him it jams, shoots left, sometimes misfires, etc. Tell him you want him to buy you a new XD-45.
