Do the 2006 XD9's have the new melonite(sp?) finish on them?

I've read many other threads and some say all the 06 guns have the new better finish and some say only the XD45's have the new finish. Anyone got any solid info??

The official SA reply is that only the XD 45acp's have the new finish. Some members think they have seen the new finish here and there on other models. Hard to say.

It's doubtful that 06 guns have the melonite finish and there really is no way to tell if a gun has a genuine melonite finish so I am just going to assume I can never get my xd coated with melonite based upon S.A.'s official response. Does this sound right?

I am with you on this Oni.... I dont know why they wouldnt melonite the others, and only the .45acp.

I dont have an XD yet (I stress they word YET) lol.

But I AM wanting to get a 9mm as well as the .45

They wife really likes em too, so she wants a 9mm.

But I really am bothered by them not offering the other models in melonite. Seems to me that it would be putting an end to one of the complaints some have about the XD line. Plus it would shut up a few more die hard glock guys who bash the XD line for rusting, in the process lol....

the wife wants the bi-tone, so its not really a problem for us.

but damnit all ta hell....... it still bothers me

So it would be a waste of time to attempt to get a stock xd 40 melonite finished by S.A.?

Bitones are cool but it still insults guns by making it look like a toy that can be thrown around. (the finish is probably more beneficial(to me at least subjectively) than the pretty looks of the bitone.

I wouldnt say a waste of time at all. Personally, I like my guns to be 'stealthy' lol. If I do end up with a non .45acp XD, I will probably get it melonited by SA if they will do it. ( I dont know if they would do it though, but its worth a try)

The wife likes the bi-tone, so it wouldnt be a problem for her, but for me, I like da all black finish.

Melonite isn't just a coating on the gun, it's a treatment done to the metal itself. Also, I think the reason for putting it ONLY on the .45 for now is to encourage people to buy that gun rather than the other ones, as it costs a little bit more. They are promoting the xd45 a whole lot more than any of the others. I bet you a lot of people haven't even heard of an XD until now. Granted I just heard about them first time back in december, but they aren't wildly popular like the glock, S&W name or something like that. I think in time melonite will be on all, but don't go looking for them being able to put it on your current gun. I also think the melonite process is done in Croatia only, as that's where the guns are made.

Do you have any ideas why S.A. is being so strict with the melonite finish?

It's not asking for much and S.A. can make pricing accordingly.

I am pretty sure that youy are correct on the melonite being done in Croatia. I read somewhere that they use toxic chemicals to do the treatment so it isnt allowed to be done here in the US, or something to that effect (someone correct me if Im wrong).

But you would think that SA would tell them (the Croats, I mean) 'hey, folks want that treatment on thier other XDs too.'

It probably is a marketing strategy though, so it will be awhile before they give it to us on all the other models.

ETA:

And now that I think about it, I highly doubt Sa would be willing to melonite a non melonite gun due to the fact that it would have to go all the way back to the plant to be done (and that sucks)

Whatever finish you put on it, the underlying metal still isnt treated with melonite

Thanks for the clarification.
