06 XD9's have the armory kote. I'm not sure what that is, probably similar to duracoat and gunkote?

Once they satisfy the demand of the XD45's, perhaps the 07 models will all have melonite slides.

Melonite can be done in the US. Even after the gun is manufactured. Somebody else posted a link to a place called Burlington Engineering out in California.

I talked to them today and while they couldn't give me an exact price, the cost is roughly 200 bucks. They did mention that they do ALOT of guns.

It's about the same price as many other high-end finishes. And it's better in alot of ways, especially than hardchrome for rust resistance.

I read an article in a handgun magazine that the Melonite finish is the same as the tennifer finish on Glocks. The reason it's called melonite is Glock probably has a patent on the name. Both finishes come from the same company. Springfield probably doesn't want to start putting the more expensive finish on the XD line because then they would have to raise their prices somewhat which in turn raises the dealer price & then yours. I'm sure they are very happy that most dealers are keeping the XD line priced below the Glock's. If someone likes both guns they are usually going to buy the XD that's $30-50 less & pocket the xtra cash. The popularity of the XD line at the present time is not putting any pressure on Springfield to make any sudden changes to a successful program. So for now, only the 45 gets the melonite.

Tennifer and Melonite are both forms of Nitrocarburizing. Heat treating the parts in a nitride bath or atmosphere. Note that it is heat treating, an important point for consideration if you want to do it to a gun you already own.

I have an XD-357 sig made in '05 and I am here to tell you the slide DOES NOT look like it is finished with Armory Kote like Springfield says. My Springfield TRP Operator has Armory Kote and the finish looks like a very thick bake on finish. It is very dark black and semi-gloss. The finish on my XD-357 looks thin and gray/black almost like parkerizing.

I believe the process also involves a toxic cyanide based chemical bath. This is why it is not done in the US. This place in Kali is probably shipping them out. From what I understand the EPA will not allow the Tennifer/Melonite process in the US.

Curious, do you have any ideas why not?
