Service 45ACP or SC 40 S&W
OK here is my problem, I was at the gun shop this weekend.
Looking over the XD SC models, when I saw the 45 ACP service. I am looking for concealed carry pistol and thought that the SC model was the one to go with. But now I can't stop thinking of the 45, I know the 45 is by far the best round for defence. But how well can I conceal the 4" model with an OWB holster I'm 5'9'' 220lbs. Any help from those of you folk that carry the larger frame guns would be helpful, and the type of OWB holster you use. Or should I just stick with SC . |

I would go with the 45 myself, but I am a bit biased. I love the 45ACP, and the only handgun I have that isn't chambered in that is a little Beretta Tomcat in 32ACP. The 45 Service fits very nicely on my side in the OEM holster, and I cover it with my black leather jacket. I found the holster for the mags to be a pain however, and felt they worked much better stuck in my inside pocket. The great thing about the leather coat is that if the gun sticks a little below it isn't obvious since the gun is black too.

Your body should be big enough to conceal the 4 in service model. I'm 5'9", but I only weigh 155 lbs so I carry a XD-40 SC. I had a regular 4in model for a while, but the grip stuck out too much for me.

I'll be the contrarian here and say that the .40 will be much easier to conceal. You and I don't differ too much in both weight and height, and you will find that the grip on the .45 is quite hard to conceal unless you choose your wardrobe wisely. If you're built with those cute little "love handles" at the beltline like I have, they have a tendency to push the grip outwards.
If you insist on the .45, I personally would look at another brand of compact handgun.
