Lightening the XD Slide
I know this is done with angle cut slots by canyon-creek. I'm a pretty mechanically inclined guy and was wondering what ya'll thought about milling part of the slide to lighten the slide and make the gun operate a little faster and smoother. The area I would like to remove some of the top of the slide similar to a Glock 35. The area that is indented from the inside of the slide, the area with the slide number on it. Now does this number mean anything and wil it hurt to get rid of it? Will SA do warranty work on my gun even with this modifacation? Has anyone tried this and what do ya'll think of this mod? Thanks ya'll

There probably most likely is no way in hell S.A. will perform work on a self modification,. and there are serial #s on the slide for a reason. Though that does sound like a cool modification and something I would be interested in.
I'm guessing the lighter the slide is the faster the recoil might be.

I've often considered the same area but don't have the equipment ( nor the proper knowledge) to do it correctly. I suspect it would void the warranty on the slide for true. Maybe the rest of the gun also since this would change the recoil forces.

i am guessing you would have to have a good milling machine and a special jig to fit the slide of the gun to perform this kinda operation on what ever firearm you were modifying. thats just a guess though.

I would have to agree, but thats just an opinion. Changing the weight of the slide is not only going to affect the slide itself, but also the cycle rate, spring forces as well as operation of of internal parts. |

I have the machining experience and access to the tools. I want to do this to allow the gun to shoot faster and smoother, it's not removing alot of weight but just a little to tell a difference and to be different. Maybe the SA tech guy can give me more info on the warranty, there is a number on the slide but it dosen't match the serial on the frame so whats the deal? Maybe Rich at cc could answer more on this as well, because he does a similiar mod only leaves the area with the number?
Why I tought of this: Because my current XD needs company and I was thinking if I got a Sub-Compact to carry and a TActical(to Trick out of course) I would have no need for the service 40 I have now, but wait I can't sell a gun and besides I need a backup range gun incase my tactical ever broke down. Doing this would also give me an extra gun when one of my friends wanted to shoot. And so therefore the hopes of getting a new gun left me wondering what mods I wanted to do to my current XD. |

I seem to remember pictures that AJames had with Rod Leatham's XD and how the slide was milled out to do the same thing. Ask AJames and see if he has any advice.
