ported xd-9 barrel options........
I have a ported xd-9 that I really enjoy shooting. I originally bought it thinking it would be easier for my fiance to shoot. now i'm realizing that it is a poor choice for home defense. I was curious about my options.
1.) Buy an aftermarket non ported barrel in the same 9mm size. 2.) Sell my gun, buy a .40 and then an aftermarket 9mm barrel. What do you guys recommend? and wheres the best place to get a deal on a aftermarket barrel? Any other ideas? Thanks for any help. |

Why do you think it is a bad op for self defense? The way it is ported the flash stays out of vision and you can buy defense rounds with low flash points. For my wife it's the best for self defense becouse of the low recoil.

Because if I needed it for home defense, I would tend to keep it close to my body and have unarmed arm forward. The gun being that close to the body the muzzle blast from the ported part could cause harm to myself.
At least it seems that way. |

well, pistol gear has the EFK barrels... i saw a recent thread about somebody VERY happy w/ an EFK barrel swapped out for their ported. a search should turn it up.
i've never fired the ported but i HAVE read that it will burn your night vision pretty well and potentially give away your position. porting should make it easier for follow up shots though so you have to weigh the pros/cons. also, if the fiance can handle the ported barrel much better than non-ported and there's the chance SHE'LL be handling the gun, leave the ported so she's not at a disadvantage. Besides: porting/non-porting doesn't matter when you chamber that first 12 gauge round... if it's for home defense, get the shotty. or, keep the 9mm for the fiance to shoot and get the new XD .45 for home defense. good luck! |

with arm forward i'm referring to opening doors and such. And the muzzle blast is not really that bad. However at the range yesterday I put a piece of paper over the ports to see how powerful the blast is......... it seems quite strong. It shredded the paper into many pieces and blasted it out of my hand. I'd hate for the blast to come up and hit chest, face, etc...... And I do realize this whole scenario is EXTREMELY UNLIKELY to ever happen!!! I'm just thinking worst case scenario.
And it is a good excuse to get a .40!!! |

That does sound like a rather strong blast, although that is a 9 mm bullet squeezing through a finely defined barrel at sonic speeds causing the recoil and blast. Something to think about.

Guys, I had a MM V10. I now have a 45ACP. I MISS my 9V10, big time. I was a better shot with it then the 45, and faster.
There are some on this forum that will have you believe you will go blind shooting it at night. I never did when I shot low level light at the indoor range. I did not notice the flames, at all. I was focused on the target. I out shot guys from the state troopers office with it. fast and low recoil. But the main thing is, what do you feel comfortable with? Have you shot it in low light? Have you tried? If you stick your hand in the flame, I am sure you could get hurt. Let me tell ya, everybody who stood alongside me when i shot it was impressed with the noise and flames, Me I didn't see no stinking flames, i was looking at the target, where you should be. I am 4t years old, eyes aren't that bad, but not that great. I never suffered any vision problems from shooting it at low light conditions. But that is me, a guy who had one. And wants one again. And will probably get another one this summer. But that is / was me. As far as the flames burning you if you have to reach to open a door. If somebody IS in my house, meaning to do my family harm, you could cut off my arm, and I will still hunt the pecker down with one arm. pain only hurts for a little. Pain lets you know your alive. chicks dig scar's. Try shooting at night. In a controlled situation. See what YOU think. |

Yeah.............. Scars are cool
I'm not really worried about the flame blinding me because of brightness, more because of burning. Again, I know this is far fetched. And so far I do love this gun. I'll probably just get a non ported barrel for the house and keep the ported barrel for the range. I shoot so well with this gun so far too. Don't really want to get rid of it. |

1.) Buy an aftermarket non ported barrel in the same 9mm size.
Stick with what you know works, then make your decision after firing both.
