If by "Hoppe's barrel cleaner" you mean Hoppe's No. 9 Solvent, it is for the inside of the barrel, to help remove residue from the rifling. I don't use "solvent" on the ouside of the slide or frame when cleaning my XD's. I use Breakfree CLP and finish with a silicone cloth.

Using gunscrubber on a gun does that. I just cover the outside of the slide with oil, and then wipe it down. That always fixes the gun scrubber issue. Now sure if this will work for ya w/ what you did.
