Malfunction? Accident? Discharged in house!! [XD9]

I can’t believe this happen! I was returning my conceal carry sub XD9 to my safe. I pulled back the slide to unload and I didn’t latch it all the way—the slide slammed forward and off went my XD! OK, I live in a development and have close neighbors. Houses are about 35 feet apart. I was upstairs in my walk in closet.

I could not believe that it went off. The POP just stunned me for a second or two. Oh **** where did that round go? Did my XD just slam fire? Did I inavertly pull the trigger when the slide dropped? I honestly don’t remember. I always practice safe firearms handling. It just that I’ve done this procedure so many times that you do it without thinking. Bad thing huh…it’s kind of like driving to work and not really remembering your trip? I always keep my XD clean and oiled. It does have a few thousands rounds through it. Funny thing, I was thinking about sending it to Springfield for an once-over since it is my conceal carry piece.

Nobody was hurt. My dog and myself are now deaf (only one home). I have a flak jacket that I keep my guns pointed at when loading and unloading. I missed! The round went through the exterior closet wall and into the attic, down into the garage and hit, of all things, a small bottle of water (water everywhere). It then put a hole into a metal mortar box (maybe 18ga steel) that I had in my garage. I store 50 cal brass in the mortar boxes. The 9mm put a dent into one of the spent 50 cal shells.

I’m so lucky the round hit what it hit and nothing else! But now what should I do with my XD? I was planning on sending it back to Springfield, because of the finish issues (rust) and use it has seen… I inspected and disassembled it, and everything seems in order. It did have a lot of lint on and in it from today.

I strongly suggest keeping your XD unloaded and sending back to S.A. if that is the case along with rust(periodic cleaning should take care of this), and the heavy usage if that is true. I wonder if lint burns easily, though you were lucky and it almost seems too good to be true

It's good that your learned alot from your weapon, a stock xd is good to learn from and shoot thousands of rounds with of course! Try putzing with your weapon in a space that is enclosed and keep its general 180 degree front barrel radius aimed at areas where people do not travel about, basements are usually good for this.

I wonder what S.A.'s current turnover time for weapon inspection is.

Since you say you don't remember the exact circumstances (finger on trigger) why don't you try to duplicate the discharge the best you can remember & see if it does it again. Go where it's safe to practice the discharge & try to redo the scenario as it happened. This may give you an idea if it's the gun. It's very possible when the slide shot forward your finger slipped & pulled the trigger. We all get a little complacent when we do the same thing day in & day out which sometimes leads to accidents. Since it happened in a split second, my guess is it would be the operator & not the gun but at this point you are uncertain. The only drawback to duplicating the event is that you now will be aware of what you're doing & the gun most likely won't discharge by slinging the slide. Glad everything turned out ok. Good luck.

Been there my friend .... I too had a AD's in my house and my kids were home .... the most sobering experience I have ever had. I will just say this .. It is a mechanical device so parts failure is possible.... the slide did something you did not expect ... i.e slamming forward when you expected it to stay back.... it startled you perhaps and caused you to flinch and tense up. Was your trigger finger up on the slide or just straight ahead outside the trigger guard? If straight there is NO way you could of kept from firing that gun when that slide dropped. Peace of mind says to send it in for mechanical inspection. Also do an honset review of your code of arms. Thankyou for sharing this .. it takes a lot to admit such an action. I wish you the best. Take care. HH

So much for the idea that a grip safety prevents ND's.

Did he mention that he had has hand around the grip safety, did he say he didn't? I must have missed something here.

How about some clarification m204me. Was your hand on the grip safety or not? Do you remember?

p.s. GLAD nobody got hurt.

holy crap! lucky no one was hurt!

Try this at your own risk: if you have a safe outdoor shooting area, you may try to re-produce the incident to see if the gun will actually slamfire a single round.

Either way, when you send it back to SA, give them as much detail of any perceived [and real] issue(s) you have with the piece - including an account of what happened. Don't try to diagnose it, let them do that. Just tell them the facts to date and you want them to make absolutely certain that the gun and all its safety features are working correctly.

The firing pin is fine? That little tab to hit the firing pin safety isn't broken? I'm under the impression that the trigger disengages the firing pin safety. I'm not sure how far back the slide needs to be pulled to get back in the safe zone, but it doesn't look like it should be all that much.

I think you had your trigger on the finger. So long as noone was hurt, live and learn.

Bobby Lee, are you saying a grip safety doesn't help prevent ND's? Or are you sayin that a grip safety should stop all ND's? Are you being an asshole or just retarded?

I think the chance that you pulled the trigger is pretty high.

This is easy to check unload your gun and drop the slide on an empty chamber to see if you can replicate the problem.
