I want an XD, but not sure on what caliber.
I've been checking out this forum for a while now and I finally registered. You all seem to be a good group of people.
I've already decided to buy an XD for my first pistol, and now I am trying to decide on what caliber. In other gun forums there are debates on what caliber is best overall, or best for certain situations, but I wanted to know what people on this forum think. I don't know if I am searching the wrong way or what, but I can't seem to find a thread on this subject. If there are old threads that I missed please let me know. I am trying to decide on a 9mm or a .45 acp. So far I've shot a Ruger p89 9mm, glock 22 .40, glock 23 .40, XD Service .40, and XD Service .45 acp. I have to say that I really loved the .45 and the recoil was no more than a .40, maybe even less. I live in California so I'm limited to 10 round magazines. Any input would be great. Thanks |

i am in the same boat you are. An XD will be my first handgun purchase. I have been debating on the xd 40 or xd9.
i am leaning towards the 40, because if i want to later on, i can buy a 9mm barrel and use it in my 40. 9mm will be alot cheaper to shoot than the 45acp, so you might want to consider that |

Well for me at lest the deciding factor was cost I want to shoot alot and as much as I would love the .45 ACP it just cost to much for a broke college student.
but if you are the type of guy that like the big .45 and money is not a problem or your gonna shoot once a month and carry then i would say the .45 is a good fit

If the .45 is comfortable for you then that may be your gun. I believe Kalifornia makes buying easy. Everything carries the mandatory 10 round...so go with the biggest hole producer.

Don't sweat the decision too much - it's an XD - the next thing you know you'll have an assortment of bore diameters and barrel lengths...

Thanks for all of the replies!
To rephrase the question: I'm not too familiar with the different calibers, obviously the .45 is a bigger heavier bullet, but also slower. Is velocity much of a factor for pistols when it comes to performance? |

Not at pistol range.
At 25 yards or less, all of them pretty much shoot flat. Now, in terms of stopping power, there's a big difference. Few people will argue that 45 is a better stopper than 40, which is a little better than 9mm. However, two or three of ANY of these calibers will seriously f*#k up anyones day.

i would say go with the 45 for sure. i would have my xd in 45 if it werent for 2 reasons, one, i couldnt find one when i had the money, and two, i already have a 1911 in 45 so i wanted to switch it up a bit with the xd40. i will not argue that my 1911 would be a better stopper than my xd40, but i have only 7 chances to get the job done with the 1911, the xd gives me 12.
