I'd find a used one in good shape... as far as which gun goes, any of the suggestions XDRox made would be good choices (although personally, I'd pass on the Beretta). my choice would be either the Ruger or Browning...(Ruger will be much cheaper, but is still a quality gun). it's an excellent idea to start your wife shooting a .22...can't go wrong there. if you can afford it, pick up a .22 rifle as well (Ruger 10/22 is a great choice). as far as your wife using a .22 for carry/home defense, I'd advise against that, unless there are no other guns available to her. while the .22 is better than nothing at all, it is generally accepted that the .22 is NOT an acceptable defense caliber. there will be some who disagree with this, but trust me, they are a small percentage. the .22 is an excellent plinking/learning/small-game hunting round, but for a defense gun there are much better/wiser choices. hope this helps... -JJ |

WOW! What a lot of fun....!
Well, my first the Sunday morning on the shooting range was an absolute blast! What a lot of fun that is!
I will try to take some pictures of my targets (of course I saved them...) and post them up here. Quote:

I loved the SA! I put a total of 95 rounds through that one. One box of 50 that I brought and then had to get another box at the Range shop 'cause I liked it so much!!! I would have done more but it was very busy at the range so the guys in my group and I changed out on our line every so often and I was only there for about 2.5 hrs (shooting time that is...)! Well, I guess I need to look into cleaning the guns now because that is something I also don't know how to do. I hope to be able to get around to doing that toninght! Unfortunately I didn't have time to do that on Sunday.... Any advise that you guys can give on that? I am sure there are some threads here on cleaning too..... I'll start my search later on. Anyway, just to make a long story not much longer.... I had fun and I am definitely doing it more often. I need to check out the indoor range around the corner since it is 2-3 minutes away and the Styx Rvier range is about an hour away! More shooting time! Alrighty then.... later. Dutchie.

just not a Beretta fan... had a 9000s a few years back... it wasn't bad, but I wasn't crazy about it either.
shot some 92's a bit as well...same deal there, not bad guns, but nothing special either, IMO. it's just a personal preference thing... I like Sigs/XD's/1911's way more than anything Beretta, but that's just me. (well, I wouldn't mind a nice Beretta shotgun, but who can actually afford one of those!!? I'm sure the Neos is a decent gun, I'd just take the Ruger/Browning myself. now, in a perfect world, Springfield would make an XD in .22!!! -JJ |

you never can tell though...if ammo prices keep going up, I think you'll see manufacturers offering lot's of options in .22. already starting to see it in the AR market. oh well, guess we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed... -JJ |

here is a link to a vid on cleaning the XD...while I personally do a couple things different, this guy's instructions are pretty good; this'll get you headed in the right direction... YouTube - Cleaning the Springfield XD Series a couple of additional tips: 1) make sure you clean your mags also...(I clean mine every couple trips to the range). here's a link: YouTube - Cleaning Handgun Magazines 2) a Hoppe's Boresnake will save you a lot of time/patches. here's a link: Hoppe's 9 - BoreSnakes 3) I highly recommend Breakfree CLP...(nope, I don't work for'em, just use it, and like it.) + if it's good enough for our troops, it's worth looking into. CLP also eliminates the need for multiple chemicals; only 1 bottle to keep up with... one more note...make sure you lube the pistol well. it has to be lubed to work properly. here's a link that explains more about why: Weapon Lubricant for Reliable FIrearm Function good advice, from someone who has probably forgotten more about guns than most of us will ever learn... now for the revolver... here's a cleaning link for it: YouTube - Cleaning Revolvers same general principle as cleaning the pistol, just a bit different. (cleaning the revolver is what will make you love that Boresnake.) hope this helps... holler if you have more questions. -JJ Last edited by jj79; 10-27-2009 at 02:25 AM. |

I hope to be able to get around to doing this (or at least examining the vids...) tonight. Where do you get the bore snake and CLP? Can I get that stuff at my local Walmart? I do have an Academy Sports around here somewhere..... Any size differences in the bore snake? Or just one size-fits-all? Sorry about all the questions just want to make sure I do it right the first time and not run around town like a headless chicken trying to get my stuff together.... Thx again to all of you here hleping me out! Dutchie.

as far as the boresnake goes, they are caliber-specific, so you'd need one for the .40 and one for the .357. they usually cost approx. $17.00 each...but trust me, it's $$$ well spent. -JJ |
