High Temp Poly Frame Distortion Question

Does any one know at what temperature the XD's Poly frame will start to distort?

The reason I want to know is I am looking at fire resistant gun safes. Most of the models are rated at 1250* exposure for 30 mins with max 350* internal temps. I have seen a few "file boxes" that are fire proof and rated for digital media. They claim to maintain a lower internal temp. Somewhere around 225*.

Would that be a better option for the poly frame pistols?

God forbid my house burn down, but if it did I would hope my XD's would have some chance or survival in the fire box.

Good Shooting,
LDC

The XD frame material has been reported as BASF Ultramid 66 or generically as Polyamid 66 (glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic). If so, the melting temperature is somewhere in the 475-500F range. I would think short term exposure to 350F air should not be a problem. Now I can't say what it would do to the finish on your wood rifle stocks.

Google those material designations for more specific info.

keep your XD frozen in ice in the safe until you're ready to use it. will protect against the heat longer.

You have insurance, right? The guns are legal, right? Let them melt. It's not like there is a XD shortage. You will make your local gun shop owner and Springfield happy too.

Fireboxes are for pictures and paperwork. :P

Ft. Knox safes are good for 90 minutes at 1680 degrees. That and the beautiful finish is what sold me.

Yeah but from what I have read before some insurance companies won't pay for firearms. The safe is more for theft than fire. I can't stand the idea that some thug may steal a gun of mine and use it as a weapon against my gun rights. Not to mention to keep children out. If a child harmed them self or another child/person with one I would have a hard time dealing with it. Plus I have 5 custom 10/22's that I would rather not replace. It took many hours of tweaking and I have them just how I want them.

There are just so many reasons why I would rather keep the guns I have rather than try to replace them.

Bull**** they won't pay for firearms. It's your goddamn property and you're paying them to refund you for all the property that you own. What a bunch of assholes.

Sorry... that just hit me in the wrong spot. I'm tired of how firearms seem to be the exception to everything.
