Newbie needs advise!!!!
Hi everyone, I have been sneaking around here for a long time but just never posted. I purchased an XD40 service about 6 months ago and have loved every minute since.
My problem is, I have recently been going to a range localy that holds regular IDPA competitions and I am hooked. I just wanted some advise on what I should do. My problem is the recoil. I have shot alot of .40 and .45 and it seems that the .45 is easier for me to "rapid fire" without loosing alot of accuracy. I understand that there is alot you can do to adjust the recoil. I am looking at getting into reloading so I can customise the rounds, I have been toying around with dons guide rod and various spring weights, and I have considered getting an aftermarket ported barrel. My question is, Would I be better off trading in the .40 and reinvesting in the new XD.45? Or am I on the right track? I mean how much recoil can you really adjust?I am kind of new to all of this but every time I go to these meets all I see is .45 glocks and 1911's. I just want to get out there and show these guys what the XD is all about

IIRC Ported barrel means a new gun, you can't put a ported barrel in a non ported slide.
So if you have to buy a new gun, may as well buy a .45 and sell the .40 (or send it to me).

I don't shoot any comps. I did install a DGR and 22# spring, and I notice a lot quicker sight acquisition. Recoil changed to a different feel, slower is it. You can change from as low as a 14#, someone said, and as high as a 24#. I'd give a couple of diff. springs a try before unloading the gun.

As coming from a long run shooting in IDPA. Here's what I'd do. Stay with the .40cal! Order a Don's guide rod, custom order a 10lb-12 lb spring for it. Since factory loads will no longer function in your gun with a 10lb spring, RELOAD. Dillon 550b is the best reloader for the money. Use 155 or 175grain lead semi-wadcutter bullets, with 4grains of 760 winchester smokless powder.
This combo will give you low recoil with super fast after shots, easy to load and really easy to shoot! Don't take my word for it and try it at your own risk but that's what worked for me in 3 1911's and 1 glock (all .40cal) over 6 years of me and my two brothers shooting IDPA. Oh and for validation I still have all the trophies! |

I have Don's guide rod and a 22# (i think) spring Practice practice practice!!! I have shot in about 5 or 6 local matches the faster I try and shoot the the slower I am the last match I shot in I made sure to aim( I know that sound funny to say) my shots, I see a lot of point shooting and some really poor hits if hits at all.I didnt drop many points this time and I scored much better grip, stance, sight picture, practice reloads sorry got a little windy there .40-.45 |
