Recoil Spring Question - Commander Length?

I bought a recoil spring for a Colt Commander to use in my XD 9 Service and I have a question.

I believe that a Colt Commander has a 4.5 inch barrel and my XD 9 Service has a 4.05 inch barrel. So my question is, do I need to cut the spring down by .45 inches in order to obtain the proper rating of the spring? For example, will an 18# spring still be an 18# spring when cut down?

Then thoughts on this vary from it will remain the same, it will reduce it, and it will increase it. Here is a link to a thread in the Gun Springs section on Brian Enos' forum. It goes into quite some depth on the thoughts:

Also take a look in Don's Guide Rod section on this forum.
