I started with 400 grit paper to remove the coating, then 600, then to 800 to remove most of the sanding scratches. You can go finer than that if you'd like, the less scratches the better. I used the mothers mag and wheel polish comes in a little white tub with red lettering. smears it on the barrel and take a towel to it, it will turn black (means its working ) It will get you there if you keep at it

If you want a mirror like shine quickly and have a drill, many stores (home depot, lowes, sears, harbrfreight) sell 2", 3", and 5" buff wheel kits that come with red tripoli and white rouge compounds for around 5-10 bucks. Just take the buff wheel on the drill spin it up, start with red to cut and remove scratches, then put on diff wheel and use the white rouge, then follow up with mothers. and youre blingin!

Hmhmmm, cool project! There are definitely many steps involved and this is something I want to do. The finished product looks great, so it has to be finished up with mothers mag to produce that chrome shine eh? I'll try it, though how long did it take you to sand and polish your barrel? I was just wondering because I get frustrated easily(gotta get things done quick)

It will take you a few hours if you take your time. Just dont rush or you will have a scratched barrel, make sure you dont skip the finer grits. I would use the buff wheels on a drill, buy the kit from homedepot for 10 bucks and it will come with everything you need. I like the mothers to follow up with after the buffing compounds in the kit. I dont like to use a dremel for buffing because they turn at such a high rate of speed and leave buff scuffs on the finish. Unless you have an adjustable speed dremel, I would use the buff kit on a drill.

Here is mine. I purhased a Black and Decker dremel kit for about $30 and it included everything I needed to polish my barrel. (compound, wheels etc) The pix are horrible but it really is a mirror like finish. Looks flawless in person......

hmmm.... me likes alot!!!

seems like it would be a cheaper alternative to chrome plating... less weight than all the extra chrome plating as well.

so why dont you see people doing the slide and some other small parts? Id like to see slide, barrel, trigger, and rear grip saftey polished up and brought to a nice luster like that.

ill ask again WHY isnt anyone doing this?
