XD sight question
I am sure this is a dumb question, but since purchasing my XD 45 ACP, and now a new SIG, what keeps the sights aligned when installing new ones? I'm not going to change them myself, but i'm still curious. I mean, is there some sort of stop that I can't see? What? All I have read about using a BFH and a punch makes me wonder what keeps them positioned properly.
Thanks in advance.

on both my xd 40's there are marks on the inside of the dovetail that you can line up the sights with.

I read somewhere about the marks, but I can't see any.
Maybe I can't see them with the sights on?

The proper way to center sights on a slide is by using a set of calipers. Lay the slide on its side on a flat surface and measure the distance from the top of the sight to the surface and flip the slide over and do the same for the other side. Move sight accordingly until those two distances equal each other. The marks are close but this is exact.

there are two small lines one on each side of your front and rear sight, they are exactly the width of the sight base and if your sights are centered correctly the base will sit right ontop of these two lines..
That said.... I personally always center the sights when installing them as close as possible and then use a laser boresighter to actually verify they are on the money since relying on the measurments from the slide is actually only a ballpark way of getting close measuring off the side of the slide will not account for actual barrel position within the slide the only way to get the true barrel centerline is via the old method (prior to inexpensive laser boresighters) of placing a boresight arbour in the barrel and centering the sights off of it.. |

The question was what keeps them in place.
They are wedged in -- the slot is slightly tapered. Or if replacement sights are too loose you can stake the slide underneath the sights (so they will be tight when tapped to the center). Or, you can use something like Loc-tite which will bond them in place.

Thanks for the info guys.
Still convinced I want someone other than me doing the install. Would anybody recommend someone in the Columbus Ohio area. Don't really want to ship my slide off just to have sights installed
